The irony was not lost on any of the Orioles, least of all batting coach Tom McCraw.McCraw was well aware the Detroit Tigers led the American League with 93 home runs and had homered in 10 consecutive games, their longest streak since 1987. He knew the Tigers also led the league in runs, while the Orioles were 11th on the 14-team list.In a stunning reversal of form, the Orioles pounded four home runs in a 10-2 victory last night and allowed the Tigers not a one. Cecil Fielder came closest, with a single off the leftfield wall.

BRADENTON, Fla. -- It's a little early to get this started, but just as John Oates was manager-in-waiting under Frank Robinson, new hitting instructor Greg Biagini appears next in line under John Oates.Biagini, 47, is a virtual unknown in Baltimore, but not to the Orioles. He spent nine seasons managing in the club's minor-league system, the last three at Triple-A Rochester. Already Oates has dubbed him "the sleeper" of his new staff.Oates has nothing to fear entering his first full season -- in fact, he might be good enough to manage the Orioles the next 10 years.

Center fielder Mike Devereaux, one of the hottest hitters in the Baltimore Orioles lineup the past two weeks, was removed from the game with a strained groin in the third inning.Devereaux apparently suffered the injury as he pulled up at second base after a single by Cal Ripken. The strain was described by club officials as slight, but he was removed for precautionary reasons. Joe Orsulak replaced him on the bases and also took his place in the outfield.Though Devereaux is not expected to be out long, the club will miss his bat. He has been on a 22-for-58 tear and has raised his average from .196 to .289 during the past 14 games.

The last thing a team in a rut wants to come up against is a pitcher on a roll, but that's what awaits the Orioles tonight (7:35, HTS) in the person of Kansas City's Bret Saberhagen. The two-time Cy Young Award winner has not lost since April 29, garnering five wins in seven starts. During that stretch Saberhagen has a 2.17 ERA and has thrown three complete games. In fact, if you throw out Saberhagen's only two rough outings of the season, against New York early in April and Seattle last month, his ERA falls to 1.44.

With a perfectly straight face, Orioles reliever Mike Flanagan responded to the question that has been asked in baseball since time immemorial."We didn't practice home games in spring training, that's why we're not winning at home now," Flanagan said.Of course. Why didn't someone else think of that? The Orioles were officially the home team for nine spring exhibition games this year, but they were staged at five different sites because the club didn't have a field in Florida to call its own.So without practicing home games, Flanagan points out with unassailable logic, how can the Orioles be faulted for their dreary record at Memorial Stadium this season?

Prophet of Innovation Joseph Schumpeter and Creative Destruction By Thomas K. McCraw Belknap Press / 736 pages / $35 Wade into almost any important debate about the 21st-century global economy and Joseph Schumpeter has already been there, defining the terms, coining the catchwords, predicting the outcomes. Funny, he died 57 years ago. Many know that Schumpeter originated the poetically paradoxical term that describes today's U.S. economy: "creative destruction." The native-Austrian economist also foresaw the fatal divide between skilled and unskilled workers in technological societies.

ARLINGTON, Texas -- Not that they should need any convincing, but the Orioles now have another reason to trade for Bobby Bonilla. This is Jeffrey Hammonds' fourth career trip to the disabled list. He's not going to help the Orioles this season. And at this rate, he might never become an impact player.Hammonds merits the benefit of the doubt, because he's coming off reconstructive knee surgery, and his neck injury might be the result of trying to overcompensate for his leg. But it's always something with him, isn't it?
