"This is a jewel in the city," said Laura McCall of her four-story deck house in Coldspring New Town styled by Israeli architect Moshe Safdie after Italian hillside townhouses.McCall bought the house new in 1979 for $45,000 and had hardwood floors -- rather than carpeting -- put in for $2,000. She said she was offered almost double the total for the house in the late 1980s, but she decided not to sell.Safdie was an architectural genius, McCall said, explaining that he gained worldwide fame for his bubble houses at the Montreal Expo in 1967.

COLLEGE PARK -- They say excuses are for losers. But the Maryland football team will be replaying yesterday's ill-fated 68-yard fourth-quarter drive for a long time. The march produced only a 28-yard field goal by Brian Kopka and was a major factor in a 25-22 loss to Duke. The drive had many twists and came within inches of producing a touchdown that would have given the Terps a 26-17 lead with less than 10 minutes remaining. As usual for Maryland, LaMont Jordan was in the middle of things when he took off for what appeared to be a 61-yard run to the 1-foot line on third-and-two from the Maryland 38.But a 10-yard holding penalty against the Terps brought the ball back to the Maryland 28.The Terps did make up a lot of the real estate with the help of a 15-yard personal foul penalty against Duke.

The first two attributes have helped McCurry, 23, who is 2-0 with a 1.30 ERA in five starts, raise some eyebrows at Single-A Delmarva this season. The third is a big reason he ended up in the Orioles' organization. McCurry, a resident of small-town Candler, N.C., located near Asheville in the western part of the state, excelled at Surry (N.C.
