BRISTOL, Conn. -- For nine years, baseball has been an important component of the ESPN schedule, but if the fight between the worldwide leader and Major League Baseball doesn't turn out well, ESPN president George Bodenheimer said he is prepared to move on."We love baseball. You see what we do on the air every day with baseball. You saw what we did [Sunday night] with the baseball game. We did a great job and then we moved to `SportsCenter' and we covered all the big stories," Bodenheimer said yesterday, speaking to a room of reporters covering ESPN's impending 20th anniversary.

"I don't think there's much to be said."

Take it from a couple of guys who should know: Barbaro is the real deal. NBC's Gary Stevens and ESPN's Jerry Bailey, both recently retired from the ranks of the nation's best jockeys, expressed no doubt about Barbaro's ability to add the Preakness to his Kentucky Derby victory. "Barbaro appears like he's one of those unbeatable horses," Bailey said this week. " ... For somebody else to win, Barbaro has to run a weak race." "Barring anything unforeseen, [Barbaro] should win again," Stevens said.

EVEN BEFORE Gov. Parris N. Glendening announced Level 1 water restrictions, western Howard County families on wells have long known about conserving water. Jane Caswell of Highland has been doing it for three years. Caswell says her well nearly went dry in the spring, and she knew it was time for a new one. "It was a really good little well," she said "It's been in here since 1941." But the drought caught up with her. Her old well, a 23-foot, hand-dug well in her basement, had served her nicely for the first three years she lived in her house.

Sometime toward the end of the 1998 NFL season, NBC's first without professional football in more than three decades, the dull throb of missing the NFL became a certified ache in the pit of Dick Enberg's gut and he knew he had to do something, anything, to make it go away. "That first year, I had trouble sitting through games, and late that year, I heard some announcer say, `I talked with Dan Marino yesterday.' And I bolted up in my chair, and I said, `That's what I used to do. I'd say, `I talked with Dan Marino,' " Enberg said.
