A woman was pronounced dead yesterday after being found in the driver's seat of a car that crashed into the front of a mausoleum in a Northeast Baltimore cemetery, city police reported. Homicide Detective Marvin Sydnor said the woman, whose name was not released, apparently drove the Ford Contour from a roadway in Parkwood Cemetery in the 3300 block of Taylor Ave. for about 50 feet before crashing into the mausoleum. Sydnor said that the driver's air bag deployed and that the woman's upper torso was trapped under the steering wheel.

RAMALLAH, West Bank -- Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas dedicated Yasser Arafat's sleek new mausoleum in a ceremony yesterday, drawing on his predecessor's continued popularity as he heads into peace negotiations with Israel. The dedication of the mausoleum, on the third anniversary of Arafat's death, was meant to boost Abbas' legitimacy as he faces a stiff challenge from the rival Hamas. Arafat died at age 75 in a French military hospital, after spending his final years under Israeli siege at his West Bank headquarters.

Outside, thousands more souls rested in a cemetery. The groom wore an old-fashioned undertaker's suit. A cosmetologist who usually works on the dead did Susie's makeup. And Susie herself wore a garter with two dangling silver skulls.

For most people, an eternal resting place means a traditional burialplot, perhaps cremation. But for a growing number of county residents, and people elsewhere, the resting place of choice is an above-ground crypt in one of a number of different types of mausoleums. The mausoleum, once the burial place for the rich and famous, hasbecome an option for more people because of increased availability and lower prices, said Dan Smith, sales manager for Glen Haven Memorial Park in Glen Burnie.Although private mausoleums can cost $25,000 to $500,000 and more, a newer type of mausoleum -- the garden style-- offers crypts that are well within most burial budgets.

In the contest to design the best mausoleum, the puns sink so low you could bury them 6 feet under."People will be dying to get into this one," exclaims instructor Michael D. Ryan, cackling while looking over one of 13 mausoleum models on display Thursday night in an Anne Arundel Community College classroom. The class assignment: design a mausoleum for the architect you admire most."Yeah, it's to die for," yelled one of the architecture students, prompting a moan from the crowd that was reminiscent of an agonized deathbed cry.And when Chien An-Hung of College Park, a 32-year-old immigrant from Taiwan, was selected by a panel of three funeral directors as winner of the $300 prize for designing the best tomb, he was reminded of a simple moral: "The paths of glory lead but to the grave."
