John Miller, 19, of Highland owes his life to three noisy dogs who he said woke him at 2:30 a.m. yesterday -- in time to flee the flames and heavy smoke spreading through his family's two-story frame house. Miller was asleep on the first floor of the house in the 13200 block of Styer Court, he said, and never heard a smoke alarm. He woke up to the loud barking of Toby and Matty -- his two black Labradors, and a basset hound named Rascal, who were upstairs. "I just had time to run out," he said later yesterday, sifting through the charred wreckage of the garage and family room with several friends.

Knockaround Guys Rated R; Sun score: * 1/2 What to make of Knockaround Guys, a film that can't make up its mind whether it wants to be The Godfather, a mob-ified knockoff of Fargo or a big-screen version of The Sopranos? Not much. Dennis Hopper and John Malkovich as high-ranking Mafiosi? Vin Diesel as the Jewish muscle (complete with Star of David tattoo)? Where's Madonna as the virginal blond who makes bad guys long to reform? Knockaround Guys is the cautionary tale of Matty Demaret (Barry Pepper)

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. -- It has been an entertaining drama followed by millions, the show known as "The Nanny Murder Trial." But yesterday, as a 19-year-old British au pair was sentenced to life in prison for a murder she steadfastly disavows, and a pair of bereaved parents described their life of daily pain, there was a sense that the final reality of the case was: Everybody loses.A feeling of shock and pity permeated reactions around the country, as parents who face their own child care problems and young baby-sitters alike discussed the jury's guilty verdict Thursday night -- a verdict that defense lawyers said yesterday they would challenge immediately.

Every generation deserves its Breakfast Club. This one can do better than The Perfect Score, even if its cast does include hot-young-actress-of-the-moment Scarlett Johansson. The Breakfast Club, about a group of high school kids in detention fighting adults' condescending attitude toward them, was one of those seminal films that burns its way onto a generation's psyche, a clarion call for understanding and identity, a plea by a younger generation for its elders to give them a break. Written and directed by John Hughes at the height of his abilities, its charismatic young cast (including Molly Ringwald, Emilio Estevez, Ally Sheedy and Anthony Michael Hall)
