The towering lacrosse player, all 6-feet-6 of him, looks surprisingly at home in Gilman's cozy art room, sitting comfortably with a palette in hand and canvas resting at eye level, straight ahead. For an hour each school day - and other valuable minutes he can squeeze in when he's particularly inspired - Jake Matthai is in his own special world. The results are impressive: an oil painting of a sailboat in deep blue waters and another overlooking a city in France he visited are his two favorites.

Matthai III, George Millholland Matthai, Scott Harrison Matthai and Randolph Steward Matthai. Also survived by six grandchildren. A Memorial Service will be held in the St. Paul's School Chapel, 11152 Falls Road, Lutherville, MD., on Tuesday, July 15 at 2 P.M. Interment private. Memorial contributions may be made in Mrs. Matthai's name to Shepherd's Clinic, 1901 St. Paul St., Baltimore, MD. 21218.

Philip Ignatius Heuisler III, a retired Baltimore businessman and longtime jazz aficionado, died July 30 of pneumonia at Gilchrist Hospice Care. He was 73. Mr. Heuisler, the son of a businessman and a former O'Neill's department store buyer, was born in Baltimore and raised in Roland Park. His secondary education at Gilman School was interrupted in 1949 by a bout with poliomyelitis. After spending six months at Children's Hospital, he wore a large brace on his upper body and right arm for several years.

When Kristy Matthai trots on the field for Westminster this week in the state field hockey tournament, it will be the continuation of a touching story of a driven teen-ager who has overcome a serious eating disorder to pursue a field hockey career.A little more than two years ago when it was discovered that Matthai had anorexia, she had to decide whether she wanted to remain painfully thin at 5 feet 6, 100 pounds or gain a mandated 15 pounds to play field hockey again.After many tears, battles with her parents, therapy, working with a nutritionist and doctor, and finally a threat from her mother (Linda)

Frances Parker Matthai, retired Bryn Mawr School librarian and former state tennis champion, died of a stroke Sunday at Brightwood Center Genesis Eldercare in Lutherville. She was 82. Born and raised in Owings Mills, Miss Matthai was the granddaughter of Horatio Parker, composer and professor of music at the Yale University School of Music. She was the sister of the late H. Parker Matthai, a Baltimore architect who assisted in the design of the city's World Trade Center. Miss Matthai was a 1939 graduate of Garrison Forest School, and earned her bachelor's degree in 1943 from Bryn Mawr College.

John Matthai Scott, who practiced internal medicine in Baltimore for 44 years and made house calls until 1990, died yesterday of respiratory failure at his Roland Park home.Dr. Scott, who was 83, was remembered by family and friends as a dedicated physician and "a wonderful, warm, genuine human being who cared a great deal for other people."From the time he returned to Baltimore in 1946 after serving in World War II until his retirement in 1990, Dr. Scott practiced in Roland Park -- first in the family's home and later in an office on Northern Parkway across the street from the Gilman School, his alma mater.

Player of the Year Theo Matthai, Bryn Mawr A four-year starter on varsity, Matthai led the Mawrtians to a 12-8 record in their first year in the Interscholastic Athletic Association of Maryland A Conference this season. The senior hitter had 12 kills in the Maryland/D.C. private schools tournament semifinals to help the Mawrtians upset No. 8 St. Paul's. Matthai is a two-year team captain, and it's no coincidence that Bryn Mawr's fortunes in volleyball began to change when she arrived at the school.
