Joe Wetherington loved a lot of things about his waterfront condo in Canton, but the layout of his old master bathroom wasn't high on the list. Although the bathroom boasted such amenities as a large whirlpool tub and porcelain tile flooring, they were not very practical for a 56-year-old man living with multiple sclerosis. As his condition worsened, Wetherington realized the space needed an overhaul to make it safer and more accessible. "I use a walker pretty heavily now, and it didn't fit through the door," he said.

Trends often influence buying decisions, and although products like clothing are more subject to trends than durable goods like ceramic tile, the way we decorate our homes is always evolving — no place more so than in the kitchen and bathroom. Elements such as cabinetry, flooring, countertops, appliances, lighting, and hardware will last for decades, or more, but because kitchens and baths are more frequently renovated than other rooms, manufacturers are continually presenting new colors, materials, and technologies.

After 10 years, Maria and John Goode's three-bedroom Lutherville house felt too small for their bustling family of four children ages 4 to 14. Yet they didn't want to buy another house and leave the neighborhood they loved. "It's in the middle of everything we need to get to," said Maria Goode. Her children were "entrenched" in their schools and local recreational activities and all four grandparents lived nearby. The prospective houses that met their requirements lay outside the community - and carried hefty price tags.

What's making the biggest splash in the bath today is not the sink, tub or super showerheads. It's the vanity. Browse through home catalogs and department stores and you'll see cabinetry worthy of the living room -- if it weren't for the sink bowl and faucet. There's a formidable selection of rich and exotic woods such as mahogany, walnut burl and zebrawood. Some cabinets are accented with carvings, decorative moldings, brackets, fluted columns, contrasting panel insets or inlays. There are hand-painted vanities, some with scenic floral designs and landscapes, and finishes that are distressed, glazed, hand-rubbed and gilt-embellished.

Richard and Diane Reba own a classic Victorian home in Frederick County dating back to the 1880s. With its arch-shaped dormers, grand staircase, delicate millwork and soaring ceilings, the house looks very much as it did when the original owners used the home as a summer retreat before the turn of the century. But when the Rebas first moved in four years ago, their classic Victorian home looked more like a modern Colonial. "Someone over the years decided to totally change the house into something it was not," Mrs. Reba said.
