The top-ranked Bryn Mawr field hockey team faced one of the toughest hurdles -- No. 9 Maryvale -- yesterday in its quest to remain undefeated. However, the Mawrtians prevailed to remain unbeaten with a 3-0 win over the Lions behind a solid defense and an opportunistic offense.Rebecca Kiselewich's goal for Bryn Mawr 6 1/2 minutes into the game was all the scoring her team needed against the Lions (5-2)."Our defense did a nice job of getting the ball out of the circle," Bryn Mawr coach Jeanette Budzik said.

Mount Hebron used a simple formula to win yesterday's Grizzly Field Hockey Tournament at Garrison Forest - the No. 6 Vikings did not yield a single goal. Led by the stellar defense of Alex Mengel, Pia Capra and Jenn Bruns, the Vikings (3-0) edged No. 12 Fallston, 1-0, in the final after slipping by Maryvale, 1-0, in overtime of the tournament opener. "It's a totally mental game and I think we were just hungry. We were hungry for the ball," said Mengel, a senior center back who cleared away just about every ball Fallston sent toward the goal in the second half.

Taylor Cummings scripted a "Hollywood ending" to a perfect McDonogh girls lacrosse season. The senior midfielder scored the game winner with 9.8 seconds left to lead the No. 1 Eagles over tenacious No. 5 Maryvale, 12-11, Sunday at Stevenson University for their fourth straight Interscholastic Athletic Association of Maryland A Conference championship and an 18-0 season. Maryvale came into yesterday's game looking for its second upset of a ranked team in six days, but the No. 15 Lions ran into supercharged Roland Park. The No. 1 Reds took a five-goal lead in the first 12 minutes and rolled past the host Lions 13-6 in an Association of Independent Schools A Division game. The Lions (7-4-1) cracked the The Sun's Top 15 for the first time all season after Saturday's 12-7 upset of then-No. 4 St. Paul's.But the Reds (9-3) didn't need that extra incentive. Coming off Tuesday's 15-5 loss to No. 3 Notre Dame Prep, which will cost them the top ranking, they were determined to get ahead quickly.

Maryvale's girls soccer team had not given up a goal all season, but that streak lasted less than two minutes against Bryn Mawr yesterday.Elizabeth Knight's deflection of Kara Boyle's cross just 1: 54 into the game proved to be the game winner as the Mawrtians took a 3-0 victory in a Catholic League B Division game at the University of Baltimore's Mt. Washington field.Theresa Sherry scored two second-half goals, a skimming header off Jen Kent's restart in the 45th minute and an uncontested shot after beating two defenders on the wing in the 72nd minute.

When Duke women's lacrosse coach Kerstin Kimel recruited Katie Chrest, she expected the Maryvale graduate to contribute right away, but not quite this much. Chrest, The Sun's 2002 All-Metro Player of the Year, leads the No. 3 Blue Devils in scoring with 40 points and ranks sixth in the Atlantic Coast Conference with 3.08 points per game. Those numbers make her the front-runner for ACC Rookie of the Year honors, to be awarded at this weekend's ACC tournament in Charlottesville, Va. In her first college game, the freshman attacker led the Blue Devils with three goals and two assists in a 16-2 win over Virginia Tech.
