Maryland and Duke are no strangers on the lacrosse field. The Terrapins and Blue Devils, who have been the Atlantic Coast Conference's two most dominant lacrosse programs in the past decade, have met during the regular season, ACC tournament and NCAA tournament's championship weekend in each of the past two years, with Maryland winning four of the six games. In the seventh matchup between the two teams in the past three seasons, No. 1 Maryland routed the Blue Devils, 16-7, in a lopsided game from start to finish at Koskinen Stadium.

The start of Atlantic Coast Conference play had seemed so long in coming for Maryland and its excitable freshmen. But when the anticipation ended and the first game finally arrived on Saturday -- in front of the high-octane sellout crowd for which the Terps players and coaches had been hoping -- it all seemed worth the wait. In a game that felt unmistakably different from Maryland's previous 13 contests this season, the Terps -- and freshmen Jake Layman and Seth Allen, in particular -- upped their energy level and passed their first ACC test in striking fashion, dismantling Virginia Tech, 94-71.

There are a couple things that make my daily commute a little worse. The first is what I call "ramp riders," motorists who take an exit ramp not to exit, but to bypass slower traffic by continuing onto the on-ramp to merge into traffic ahead of where they were when they exited. This is especially prevalent on Maryland Route 32 at U.S. Route 1 in the afternoons in the northbound directions. It's gotten worse in the last couple years with the influx of workers to the Fort Meade area. This also occurs in the afternoon on Route 95 North at Calverton (Route 212)

Baltimoreans and Marylanders have become blase about actors being in their midst, along with bellowing directors, film crews, blocked-off streets filled with Hollywood's iconic caravans of trucks, trailers and spotlights, and sidewalks choked with zig-zagging electrical cables. We've finally caught up with Los Angeles, where locals consider it exceedingly bad form to stop and gawk at a film shoot or pester celebrities. In Baltimore, first it was Barry Levinson who aroused our interest in filmmaking when he turned back the clock to 1959 during the filming of his comedy-drama "Diner" here in 1982, filling the streets with vintage 1950s cars and actors in period clothing.

This time around, there would be no letdowns. Alyssa Thomas had a game-high 23 points and 13 rebounds in just 23 minutes, as Maryland held host Towson without a basket for spans of more than 8 minutes in the first half and 6 minutes in the second, building an insurmountable early lead on its way to an 88-43 win.
