Bobby Ross got much of the credit for Maryland's short reign as the most dominant team in the Atlantic Coast Conference in the mid 1980s, but Joe Krivak was often referred to as the guru and play-caller for a string of record-setting Terps quarterbacks. Krivak, who died Tuesday after battling leukemia, tutored a line of Maryland quarterbacks that began with Boomer Esiason and Frank Reich, included Stan Gelbaugh and Dan Henning, and ended with Neil O'Donnell and Scott Zolak after Krivak succeeded Ross as head coach in 1987.

Maryland football coach Randy Edsall wants to make Terrapins spring football more of a fan event - and he hopes to start by bringing it on the road, including perhaps to Baltimore. Edsall said Friday he'd like to hold a spring scrimmage or two away from College Park. He mentioned Baltimore and the Frederick area as possibilities. "Instead of always having people come to us, we go there and make it easier for them," Edsall said. Edsall and other Maryland coaches already travel around the state with athletic department staff, talking to fans during the spring and summer.

The 11th-ranked Maryland women's basketball team will be without starting guard Laurin Mincy for the rest of the season after the junior tore the anterior cruciate ligament in her right knee during Wednesday night's 90-71 victory over No. 21 Nebraska in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge in Lincoln. After scoring a season-high 16points and going 4-for-4 from 3-point range, Mincy landed awkwardly and left with about 15 minutes to play. She did not return, though she was able to walk as well as pedal on an exercise bike during the game.

Baltimore Sun reporters Jeff Barker and Don Markus and editor Matt Bracken weigh in on the three biggest topics of the past week in Maryland sports. How well will Maryland fit into the Big Ten? Jeff Barker: Maryland should do fine in basketball. Mark Turgeon recruits nationally anyways -- an approach that has impressed his coaching colleagues at other schools. Sure, Turgeon will need to redecorate his office a bit. It contains -- as a recruiting tool -- the logos of all the ACC schools.

I suppose there will be those who think University of Maryland Athletic Director Kevin Anderson, the man who brought football coach Randy Edsall to Maryland, has made another great move ("UM to leave ACC for Big Ten in '14," Nov. 20). I for one, a graduate of Michigan State and a Maryland taxpayer, don't think so. As a fan of Maryland football since 1972 and season ticket holder for a number of years, I would rather watch Maryland beat Clemson and Florida State in football rather than Michigan and Ohio State.

As a graduate of The Ohio State University, I would like to extend a warm Buckeye welcome to the Big Ten's newest member, the University of Maryland ("UM to leave ACC for Big Ten in '14," Nov. 20). The move is great for both the Big Ten and Maryland. I could complain, like many of my Big Ten brethren, that by adding Maryland, we are not gaining anything substantial in football. I could gripe that OSU will be losing out on games against traditional foes like Iowa, Michigan State, and Illinois in order to play the Terps, but I won't.
