The Orioles changed their ticket-exchange policy yesterday, apparently in response to declining attendance since the strike. They no longer will exchange individual game tickets, and season tickets may be exchanged only for select dates. In the past, the Orioles have allowed fans to trade in individual or season tickets for current or future games. Club officials said their new policy puts the Orioles more in line with other major-league teams, about half of which permit no exchanges or refunds.

SARASOTA, Fla. -- They stood in a line 30 yards from the Orioles clubhouse, each aiming at the players entrance, waiting for their prey to step through the door. The camera people and photographers, about 20 in all, started shooting the instant that Cal Ripken Jr. emerged from the building and ran out for his first official on-field appearance in what promises to be a season filled with news conferences and sound bites.Eclipsing Lou Gehrig's record of playing 2,130 consecutive games could be easier for Ripken than dealing with the daily throng of media that will greet him. He awoke early yesterday to make an appearance on a network TV morning show, ran the gauntlet of cameras in mid-morning, held a 30-minute news conference early in the afternoon, sat for several one-on-one TV interviews.

When Albert Belle used the second three-homer game of his career as a stage to vent his frustrations Sunday afternoon, the Orioles right fielder gave no indication of when he would speak next, only that such sessions would remain uncommon.Belle, who had rebuffed media requests as recently as Thursday in Boston, asked Orioles director of public relations John Maroon to arrange a news conference in the aftermath of the team's dramatic 8-7, 11-inning win over the Anaheim Angels."It was his idea," Maroon said.

Of all the things Ray Miller wants to be remembered for in a professional baseball career that began in 1964, this isn't one of them.Though it wasn't his call to end The Streak, he'll forever be known as the manager of record when it happened. Cal Ripken walked into Miller's office 30 minutes before the game and asked to be taken out of the lineup. Miller obliged, and the rest is history. Not long before, Miller had sat behind the desk in his office, twirling a cigar in his fingers and relaying his intentions of starting Ripken for the last week of the season.
