The Capitals will have G Olie Kolzig, 6-9-4 with a 2.47 goals-against average after allowing one goal in Wednesday's 5-3 loss to the New York Rangers. Dallas is expected to use G Andy Moog, 18-10-3 with a 2.18 GAA. Capitals LW Craig Berube returns to the lineup after a two-game suspension and D Eric Charron was returned to AHL Portland yesterday.

Washington Capitals goalie Jim Carey has heard the predictions and seen the preseason reviews. The Capitals are supposed to be the fifth-best team in the National Hockey League and one of the top contenders for the Stanley Cup."Five months ago, we were physically beaten up going into the playoffs and no one gave us even a small chance of beating the Pittsburgh Penguins in the first round of the playoffs," said Carey, who earned the Vezina Trophy as the NHL's best goalie in the regular season.

The Washington Capitals traded for a familiar face yesterday, acquiring left wing Todd Krygier from the Anaheim Mighty Ducks for goalie Mike Torchia.Krygier was traded to Anaheim on Feb. 2, 1995, when he asked general manager David Poile to send him to a team on which he could get playing time. "He's coming home," said Poile. "You don't usually bring people back unless you think they can help. We sent him out a high school grad and he's coming back after college."He's a better player now, a more mature player.

LANDOVER -- The Washington Capitals were looking for defense, defense, defense against the defending Stanley Cup champion New Jersey Devils last night. But by the time the game was over, they were searching for offense, offense, offense.The Devils made first-period goals by Brian Rolston and Shawn Chambers stand up for a 2-1 victory. Goalie Martin Brodeur made 20 saves and stretched the Devils' record against Washington to 12-2-1 over the past 15 games and ended Washington's five-game home winning streak.
