KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- David DeJesus and John Buck drove in two runs apiece and Kansas City erased an early four-run deficit in an interleague clash between the two worst teams in the majors. The two starters, Mark Redman (4-4) and Kip Wells, were a combined 13-33 last year for the Pirates. Wells lasted 3 1/3 innings in his first start since undergoing surgery in March for a blocked artery.

A scout's take On Francisco Liriano, Minnesota Twins' 22-year-old left-handed starter Pitches -- He has three-plus pitches right now: His fastball is 93 to 95 mph, he's got a hard slider and a plus changeup. He has two sliders, really. One's a wider one that he throws to left-handers and he has a short, snappy one to right-handers, like Steve Carlton used to throw. Weakness -- Command is the only thing standing in his way from being another Johan Santana. He needs to be able to locate better, especially his fastball on both sides of the plate.

Still contemplating the four-pitch at-bat on the bench two innings later, Fahey got a visit from hitting coach Terry Crowley, who had specific instructions if the rookie got up in the eighth.
