The White Sox's 45-43 first half couldn't have been much more nondescript. They were 22-21 at home and 23-22 on the road. The next week will go a long way toward determining whether they are serious buyers at the nonwaiver trade deadline. Heading into tonight, Chicago is in second place in the American League Central, 3 1/2 games behind the Detroit Tigers and a half game ahead of the Minnesota Twins. The White Sox have the fourth-best ERA in the AL at 4.16. The staff is led by ace Mark Buehrle (9-3, 3.66 ERA)

Trouble with long ball Jeremy Guthrie turned in another fine performance, but home runs hurt him in the end. Guthrie pitched eight innings and allowed only four hits, but Casey Kotchman's two-run homer in the fourth inning gave the Angels a 3-2 lead, and Mike Napoli's bases-empty shot in the eighth extended that lead to 4-2. The Orioles were was unable to overcome the deficit, and Guthrie lost for the first time since he permanently entered the starting...

Ryan Zimmerman and Ryan Church, who didn't have to report until this week, played catch in the warm sunshine at Space Coast Stadium in Viera, Fla. The pitchers had telltale pieces of cotton on the arm, evidence that blood had been taken at the required physicals. Yet, when manager Frank Robinson and general manager Jim Bowden sat side by side to launch spring training for the Washington Nationals, Topic A concerned a player who wasn't to be seen: Alfonso Soriano. "My game plan is to sit down and talk with him when he gets here, and we'll make a decision which way to go," Robinson said.
