INDIANAPOLIS -- Mike Tyson was indicted here yesterday on charges of rape and three other criminal counts. But in spite of his legal troubles, the former heavyweight champion will apparently fight Evander Holyfield in a title bout in November, as scheduled.The indictment came after a monthlong investigation by a special Marion County grand jury into allegations Mr. Tyson sexually assaulted an 18-year-old woman in his suite at a luxury hotel here during the early morning of July 19.If convicted of all four counts, Mr. Tyson, 25, could face up to 63 years in prison.

It took nearly two decades, a woman named Jennifer Jenifer and a convenience store robbery in Florida, but authorities have made an arrest in a 1984 fatal shooting in Dundalk. Sheriff's deputies in Marion County, Fla., arrested Joann Culotta -- now a 45-year-old painter known as Joann Knight -- Monday on a warrant charging her with first-degree-murder. Culotta is charged in the slaying of 69-year-old John Andrykis on Oct. 7, 1984, according to documents filed in Baltimore County District Court.

Twenty-month-old Krystava Schmidt was reunited with her frightened mother, Christine Schmidt, on July 13, 1998, two days after she disappeared from the family home in the Minneapolis suburb of Mounds View. Police officers quickly located and arrested the housemate who had driven Krystava to an unsuspecting relative's house in nearby Mora, Minn., after squabbling with Schmidt's brother. In cyberspace, however, Krystava is still missing. Numerous sites on the World Wide Web feature the child's picture and the plea published by her mother the day she disappeared that any information about her be relayed to the Mounds View police.

Tyson judge expects two-week trial at mostPatricia Gifford, Marion County (Ind.) Superior Court judge, said yesterday that she expects the Mike Tyson rape trial that opens with jury selection Monday to last no more than two weeks and she plans to stick to that schedule by including Saturday sessions.Gifford said the only session closed to the media will be Monday morning, when she begins questioning 50 prospective jurors out of a pool of 130. The prosecution and defense will each have 10 pre-emptive challenges that automatically dismiss a prospective juror.

The Baltimore City Detention Center had the nation's second-highest rate of sexual contact between jail staff and inmates, according to a U.S. Department of Justice study released less than a month after federal prosecutors accused corrections officers at the jail of sleeping with gang members. The report, released Thursday, also found higher-than-average rates of inmate abuse at the Maryland Correctional Institution for Women in Jessup. Women in prison are generally subjected to more abuse than men, and nearly 13 percent of inmates at that facility reported being abused either by a fellow inmate or staff member.
