Drones over Syria? Hold on! ("CIA eyes drone strikes in Syria," March 16). The whole business of drone strikes on nations with whom we are not at war gets murkier and more distasteful daily - and cries out for transparency from the Obama administration on drone practice and policy, especially abroad. U.S. military and CIA attacks by unmanned aircraft have been going on for well over a decade now with little fanfare or even awareness by most Americans. And that's just as Presidents George W. Bush and Barack Obama have wanted it. Sure, the news is trumpeted when some al-Qaida or Taliban leader has been a "kill" by a targeted missile strike.

Here's a look at what some other media outlets have to say about the Orioles. * SB Nation's Rob Meyers weighed in after Brian Matusz's second straight strong Grapefruit League outing , saying that it doesn't actually matter whether the left-hander makes the Orioles' major league rotation this season. "If Matusz continues to pitch well this month (we're told), he could win a spot in the Orioles' starting rotation. "That's almost entirely irrelevant. It doesn't really matter who's in the Orioles' rotation this season, because the Orioles will be lucky to finish in fourth place.

Blame politicians for the bonuses Let me see if I've got this right: I'm supposed to be OK with the 9,000-plus earmarks in the president's budget proposal because the total amount earmarked is such a small percentage of the total, even though the spending will be on such things as studying swine odor and the DNA of catfish. But I'm supposed to be outraged because AIG is spending less than 1 percent of the total bailout dollars it received to pay contractual bonus obligations, obligations that Sen. Christopher J. Dodd helped to exempt from regulation ("Tax on bonuses eyed," March 18)

Craig Swanson of Reisterstown noticed Baltimore's sunrise and sunset were not 12 hours apart on the March 20 equinox: "Is this because we are north of the equator?" Nope. Day and night were equal that day everywhere - if you marked sunrise and sunset when the center of the sun's disc touched the horizon. But we calculate sunrise and set times using the first (and last) light from the sun's rim, making "days" a few minutes longer. They are 12 hours apart here March 16 and Sept. 25.
