Here is the statement: "Although we are reluctant to respond to these kinds of press reports, the rumors circulating about our relationship are completely false. We are still together, and our marriage is intact. So far, Ricky Martin and Enrique Iglesias, the most recognizable names in Latin pop, have won fans as much through sex appeal as through vocal ability, suggesting that being a hunky heartthrob is more important to crossover success than being a great singer.Marc Anthony ought to change all that.Anthony doesn't lack for good looks; he wouldn't have such a strong second career on the stage and screen if he weren't easy on the eyes. But even if he came across like Quasimodo, there's enough beauty and charisma in his voice to ensure that "Marc Anthony" (Columbia 69726, arriving in stores today)

After more than 20 years in TV and feature films, Baltimore native Jada Pinkett Smith could hardly be blamed if she wanted to slow down and ease back a bit. It seems as if the Baltimore School for the Arts graduate has been working nonstop on the national stage since her breakthrough TV debut in 1991 as a member of the cast of Bill Cosby's hit NBC series, "A Different World. " But at 39, the wife of actor Will Smith and mother of two children — who are already launched on their own show-biz careers — sounds like she is pushing herself harder than ever.

Marc Anthony is on the telephone from Los Angeles, talking about the deepest parts of his art -- how he uses melody and vocal color to tell a story in his songs that's deeper than words -- when it occurs to him that he doesn't get to talk about music much in interviews."

Marc Anthony had plenty of warning about the dangers of starring opposite his wife, Jennifer Lopez, in the story of a troubled celebrity couple from salsa's golden era. Fellow actors cautioned him that the marital conflicts in the script were bound to creep into his own relationship as some sort of evil projection on his marriage. "Everybody said the same thing: `Oh, working with your wife is going to be challenging,'" he recalls. "`It's a rough script, man, and you're going to have to go to these [tormented]

El Cantante purports to tell the story of 1960s and 1970s salsa sensation Hector Lavoe, but it's basically the tale of a womanizing man who marries the worst possible wife - a spouse who hangs on to him for dear life and knows how to use his guilt to hold them together with a spike. Marc Anthony and Jennifer Lopez star as Hector and his wife, Puchi, but this is no vanity production. Anthony plays Hector as a musical dynamo and an emotional weakling who can't say no to drugs or sex. Lopez plays Puchi as a woman who props him up when the going is good and uses his failures to cement his need for her. In her mind, she's alternately a cheerleader or a domestic rock.

WASHINGTON -- It was a packed house Friday night at the Verizon Center, but co-headliners Jennifer Lopez and husband Marc Anthony were definitely playing to differing sensibilities - with Anthony the more energetic, and energizing, of the two. As if shot from a cannon, the horns and multifaceted percussion lay complex salsa rhythms to introduce Anthony, who charmed the screaming crowd as he arose from underneath center stage, enveloped in smoke....

Brave, the title of Jennifer Lopez's new album out today, is a misnomer. And the cover shot, featuring the pop star in an intense face-off with her own image, is also misleading. The title and packaging suggest that J. Lo is breaking new artistic ground, that she's challenging herself to do more than the trend-conscious dance-pop that pushed her four previous albums to multiplatinum sales. But that isn't the case at all. Brave is the safest, most predictable album Lopez has recorded. Maybe pregnancy, as it's been rumored, has brought out a tamer side, also seen during her tepid performance with Marc Anthony Friday night at the Verizon Center in Washington.
