JOHANNESBURG, South Africa -- Britain's Nigel Mansell led all the way and Italian teammate Riccardo Patrese finished second as the new Williams-Renault cars dominated the first race on the 1992 circuit.Mansell, who had won the previous Formula One event in South Africa in 1985, opened a huge lead in the early stages of the race and never was challenged.He covered 72 laps on the 2.64-mile Kyalami race track in 1 hour, 36 minutes, 45.320 seconds.Mansell's archrival, world champion Ayrton Senna of Brazil, was third in a McLaren-Honda, and Michael Schumacher of Germany was fourth in a Benetton-Ford.

SPA-FRANCORCHAMPS, Belgium -- Defending champion Ayrton Senna of Brazil overcame gear problems to win the race, increasing his lead to 22 points in the world standings over Britain's Nigel Mansell, who dropped out with technical problems.Senna finished the race 1.901 seconds ahead of McLaren-Honda teammate Gerhard Berger of Austria. Nelson Piquet of Brazil lagged 32.176 seconds behind to take third place.With five races to go, Senna heads the standings with 71 points. Mansell has 49.1. TORONTO -- Robby Gordon broke the Penske stranglehold on the Indy-car series, at least temporarily, setting a track qualifying record on the way to winning the provisional pole for tomorrow's Toronto Molson-Indy.Gordon, 25, earned his first Indy-car pole of any kind with a lap of 110.191 mph, breaking the year-old mark of 109.998 set by Emerson Fittipaldi.Nigel Mansell took the other front-row position on the tentative grid, despite hitting a tire barrier early in the 30-minute session. His fast lap, only moments before his incident, was 109.924.

In what might have been the biggest win in Jimmy Patsos' four years at Loyola, the Greyhounds turned back the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference's best big man and forged an improbable tie for first place. It took a frenetic second-half comeback, a gritty commitment on defense, and a curious officiating call in the final 16 seconds to get Loyola past Rider, 73-68, last night at Reitz Arena and into a four-way logjam at the top of the MAAC. "I'm glad we're in first, but I want to end up in first," Patsos said after Loyola erased a 15-point first-half deficit.

MR. JOHN JOSEPH MILLNER passed away on Tuesday, January 6, 2004, at the age of 89, in Roswell, GA after a long bout with Alzheimer's and Diabetes. John is survived by his wife of 63 years, Nelda (Donegan) Millner; daughters, Patricia Boese, Michelle Bailey, and Janice Millner-Lock; grandsons, Brandono Bailey and Sean Bailey; granddaughters, Rachel Lock and Ashley Lock. A Graveside service will be held at the Arlington Memorial Park, 201 Mt. Vernon Highway, Atlanta, GA in Sandy Springs. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Alzheimer's Association or the American Diabetes Association in memory of John Joseph Millner.
