It was business as usual at Giant Food Inc. yesterday as the board of directors took less than 60 seconds to unanimously appoint Pete L. Manos the company's chief executive officer.Like Israel "Izzy" Cohen, Giant's founder and father figure who died last week, Mr. Manos was humble in accepting the top post, recalling his friend and mentor."I think he would have been proud as punch, but at the same time, he would have pointed his finger at me and told me to take care of the business," said Mr. Manos, 58."

The planned acquisition of Giant Food Inc. by Dutch grocery retailer Royal Ahold NV comes as store chains increasingly bank on consolidation to gain -- and keep -- precious market share. For Giant, such a move would have been unthinkable as recently as the early 1990s, when Ahold first approached the chain about a possible deal. But that was before the death of the homegrown chain's revered co-founder, before the chain's difficulty executing a northern expansion and before its bitter five-week Teamsters strike.

This wine from Southern Italy is a 50-50 blend of two of the region's finest white-wine grapes - varietals that date to Roman times. It's a fresh, dry wine with nuances of nuts, pear, chalk and other minerals. For its price, it offers good complexity. My guess is that it will be at its best between now and Labor Day. Serve with shrimp, white-fleshed fish.

TWO CUB Scout brothers from Pack 761 have been recognized for their outstanding effort in the pack's annual popcorn sale. John and Brian Manos of Dayton sold more than $1,025 worth of popcorn for the fund-raiser, more than one-fourth of their pack's total. John, 9, and Brian, 8, had decided they wanted to sell enough to earn the prize offered by Boy Scouts of America - a Coleman camping stove. They knocked on more than 75 doors to reach their goal. Their mother, Joy Manos, gave them good advice at the beginning of the fund-raiser.

"What is this?" That's how it starts. You're cable-surfing and land on a slick kitchen set where samurai chefs wielding machetes hack heads off live carp, wrestle thrashing squid and dice endangered abalone, as tuxedoed commentators excitedly give the play-by-play in B-movie-dubbed English. "What's he doing over there?" an off-camera observer may ask in eager, inquisitive tones. Or an on-the-floor reporter anxiously signals to an announcer, "Fukui-san, Fukui-san, Bobby just added squid ink!"
