Marie C. Gallagher, 82, of 424 Rosewood Drive, Manheim, PA, formerly of Baltimore, Maryland, died peacefully at home on Thursday, November 15, 2007. Born in Freeland, PA, she was the daughter of the late John M. and Anna Marzinko McNelis. She was the wife of the late Joseph J. Gallagher Sr, he died on October 8, 2007. Marie was a member of Saint Richards Catholic Church, Manheim and a former member of the Ladies of the Knights of Columbus. Surviving is a son, Joseph J. Jr. husband of Janet L. Gallagher of Lititz, two grandchildren, Joseph R. husband of Jeannie Gallagher of Roanoke, Virginia and Patrick J. Gallagher of Lititz; four great grandchildren, Scott, Jennifer, Trevor, and Allyson Gallagher; one brother, James husband of Patricia Gallagher of Glens Falls, NY; a sister, Helen Bell of Bridgewater, NJ and several nieces and nephews.

FIRE* Lineboro: Lineboro assisted York County, Pa., units at 11:35 a.m. yesterday at a chicken house fire on Smoketown Road in Manheim Township. Lineboro units were out for nearly five hours at the two-alarm blaze.* Manchester: Manchester responded at 10:07 a.m. yesterday to a brush fire in the 3200 block of Bixlers Church Road. Units were out 50 minutes.

JOSEPH J. GALLAGHER SR., 83, of Manheim, PA formerly of Baltimore, MD, died at home on Monday, October 8, 2007. Born in Freeland, PA, he was the son of the late Daniel J. and Margaret Conahan Gallagher. He was married 62 years to Marie C. McNelis Gallagher. Joseph retired as a mechanic for Loomis Armor in Baltimore. Mr. Gallagher was a member of the following Knights of Columbus, Bishop Sebastian Council #5058 3rd Degree and Archbishop Francis P. Keough 4th Degree both of Baltimore, Maryland.

MARY ELLEN AUGUST, 51, died Sunday, July 23, 2006 at The Heart Center of Indiana in Indianapolis. She lived with her family at 6928 Goldsberry Road, Battleground, Indiana, formerly in Baltimore, MD. and grew up in the Manheim, PA area. Born in Lancaster, she was the daughter of Clayton R. Nissley of Manheim and the late Vera Becker Nissley. For over twenty years Mary Ellen was involved in social work as a case manager for Eastern Community Health Center in Baltimore and for Friendship Community in Lititz, PA. She was the wife of Pastor Stephen Thomas August and they observed their 11th wedding anniversary in September of last year.

MIAMI -- First, let me apologize to Dan Quayle. It's been nine years since the then-vice president made his infamous speech castigating TV's "Murphy Brown" for "mocking the importance of fathers by bearing a child alone and calling it just another `lifestyle choice.'" I was part of the media mob that beat up on the veep for that. Of course, hammering Dim Dan the "potatoe" man was virtually a national pastime back then. But as the saying goes, even a broken clock is right twice a day. And on this day, Mr. Quayle was right.

Three women were taken to Carroll County General Hospital Friday after the speeding car in which they were riding crashed on Route 30 at the end of an eight-mile police pursuit from Pennsylvania, police reported. A man believed to have been the driver fled from the crash scene on foot.Pfc. Craig Snyder, of the West Manheim (Pa.) Township police, said he began following a 1992 Geo Prizm after it pulled out from behind a store south of Hanover, Pa., and he saw that it had a faulty brake light.
