The Loyola women's basketball team ended a six-game road losing streak with a 56-43 win over Manhattan last night. The Greyhounds hit nine of 11 free throws over the final 11 minutes to seal the win. Jackie Valderas scored six points for Loyola in that stretch, and Lauren Troupe added five, including a three-point play. Katie Scherle led the Greyhounds (8-16, 7-8 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference) with 13 points and eight rebounds and Valderas followed with 12 points and five rebounds.

Loyola College kept Manhattan from a major accomplishment last year, and the Jaspers weren't about to let the Greyhounds do it again last night.Manhattan built a 20-point lead with nine minutes to go and held on for a 91-83 victory over Loyola at Reitz Arena, and the Jaspers' 19th victory made them the winningest Division I team in the nation. Fran Fraschilla's club is perched atop the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference, and it had no trouble getting up for sixth-place Loyola.Eleven months ago, the brightest moment in Loyola's basketball history came at Manhattan's expense, as the Jaspers were the last upset victim in the Greyhounds' improbable run to the MAAC tournament title.

RIVERDALE, N.Y. -- Aeshimu Evans scored 18 points and grabbed six rebounds, leading Manhattan to an 85-56 victory over Loyola in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference game last night.Loyola (5-11, 1-3) tied it at 25 with 3:39 to play in the first half on John McDonald's 18-foot jumper. But Manhattan (15-2, 4-1) went on a 12-2 run to take a 37-27 halftime lead. The Jaspers led 56-33 with 11:39 remaining after a three-pointer by Geronimo Bucero.Loyola cut the lead to 57-46 with 9:52 remaining, but Manhattan had a 14-1 run, capped by Jamal Marshall's layup with 3:10 left.

MEMPHIS, Tenn. -- Manhattan is still bristling over its underdog image after ousting Oklahoma from the NCAA's Southeast Regional."I think we earned a little respect, but not enough," Jaspers guard Ted Ellis of Lanham, Md., said yesterday. "Their coach [Oklahoma's Kelvin Sampson] said the best team didn't win. We thought it did."The Jaspers will get another chance to silence their doubters today, when they clash with fifth-seeded Arizona State at the Pyramid.Manhattan was selected for the 64-team field as an at-large entry after losing the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference tournament final to St. Peter's in overtime.

SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- Notre Dame turned Manhattan inside out in the NIT quarterfinals last night.LaPhonso Ellis dominated inside and Daimon Sweet was deadly from the outside, as the Fighting Irish beat the Jaspers 74-58. Ellis scored 25 points, many on dunks, and Sweet made six three-pointers for the Irish."Coach [John] MacLeod wants us to shoot threes. That opens up the inside for Phons," Sweet said.Sweet hit three three-pointers during an 11-2 first-half run that gave Notre Dame (17-14) the lead for good.

Reserve Jennifer Mitchell scored a game-high 14 points in 21 minutes off the bench to lead Loyola to a 68-45 victory over visiting Manhattan last night in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference game. The Greyhounds (3-3) held the Jaspers to 25 percent shooting from the field in the conference opener for both teams. Ursinus 83, Villa Julie 52: Maura Fannin scored 15 and pulled down a game-high 16 rebounds, including 10 offensive, but the Mustangs (2-6) fell to the Bears (3-5) in Colleville, Pa.

NEW YORK -- Loyola shaved it closer than coach Tom Schneider would have liked, but Kevin Green made a 17-foot jump shot with one second left, and the Greyhounds upset Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference-leading Manhattan, 77-75, at Draddy Gymnasium yesterday.With the teams tied at 75 in the last 45 seconds, Loyola, interrupting its ball-control tactics with two timeouts, ran the clock down to five seconds, and guard Tracy Bergan fed Green, who put the shot up with a Manhattan defender's hand in his face.

ANNAPOLIS -- For the second time in five days, Manhattan College invaded the area to win a 79-75 basketball game.The Jaspers, who beat Loyola in overtime by that score Tuesday night, claimed Navy as their victim in regulation yesterday, leading most of the way before 612 at Alumni Hall.Reserve guard Charles Dubra sparked the key run for Manhattan, hitting 11 of his team's 13 points, including three three-point shots, in a four-minute span early in the second half."That was the key to the win," said Jaspers coach Steve Lappas.

ALBANY, N.Y. -- Against all odds, Loyola hoped to extend its basketball season into today with a victory in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference basketball tournament.The Greyhounds were playing today, but only because of tournament delays that pushed the end of their game against top-seeded Manhattan past midnight.Shortly thereafter -- 13 minutes, to be exact -- time ran out on this longest of Loyola seasons in a 57-37 loss."Our entire idea was to make this as ugly as possible," said Loyola coach Joe Boylan, who finished his two-month interim stint 1-15.
