PISCATAWAY, N.J. - Limestone College, which is in Gaffney, S.C., is a good distance from Maryland, but it would be impossible to overlook Maryland's contributions to the Saints' national championship. On a team with 24 Marylanders, many from Anne Arundel County, three particularly stepped up in leading the second-ranked Saints to an 11-9 victory over No. 1 New York Institute of Technology yesterday in the Division II national championship game at Rutgers' Yurcak Field. Junior goalie Matt Malloy (Arundel)

If Glen Burnie girls basketball coach Dan Mangum is supposed to be depressed, he's not showing it. Despite losing nine of their first 10 games this season, the Gophers welcomed back a standout player last week and could open their arms to another next week. All-County junior guard Essence Greer returned to the lineup after missing a five-game stretch due to a minor shoulder injury and the flu. In her first game back with Glen Burnie, Greer registered 18 points, seven rebounds and four steals to power the Gophers to a 74-58 victory over Northeast last Wednesday -- Glen Burnie's first win of the year.

Terry and Marta Mangum were desperate. The builder they hired to construct their new three-bedroom house in the sleepy Annapolis suburb of Edgewater had disappeared. And what Blair Gilbert of Axxent Building & Construction Inc. left behind was little more than a shack with roughed-in plumbing and electricity. The foundation was crumbling. The walls were out of plumb. Of the $162,600 construction loan made to the Mangums, which Gilbert had drawn upon, only $20,000 remained.

Whether a Pasadena man's replacement of a flat boathouse roof with a pitched roof was more than a repair is immaterial, an appeals court panel ruled yesterday. What matters is that his neighbor's complaint that the new roof ruined his view of the water is not an issue for the court. The Court of Special Appeals said the question of the pitched roof Donald Mangum put on his boathouse, blocking his neighbor's view of Cockey Creek, had been decided by the Maryland Department of the Environment.

It's not a passing attack at North County. It's a machine.Quarterback Mike Evans is behind the wheel of the "Ferndale Fury," quite possibly the most prolific passing machine in Anne Arundel County and maybe metro area history.Evans is on a course to smash most of the major state passing records with a fleet of receivers who might be the best as a group to ever play in the county. When he drops back or sprints out to pass in the second-ranked Knights' run-and-shoot offense, Evans has several options.

Call it "discovery week" in county football, as we go searching for tell-tale pieces to the puzzle. It's a no-brainer that No. 2 North County (4-0) at No. 8 Arundel (3-1) at 7: 30 tonight will be the county Game of the Week -- `` maybe even the Game of the Year.Tomorrow, No. 5 St. Mary's should give us a clue to the season ahead of it in the Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association A Conference, and No. 14 Broadneck and No. 15 Severn hope to continue their upbeat seasons.Game of Year?

Who needs slot machines and casinos, when you can watch Chuck Markiewicz and his North County Knights?Ever the riverboat gambler in his run-and-shoot offense, Markiewicz gambled with a reverse option pass on fourth-and-one at the opponents' 45 in the third period. It worked and led to the go-ahead touchdown and ultimate 26-23 victory at Eleanor Roosevelt in Prince George's County yesterday."We just kind of outlasted one another and I think we were fortunate because we didn't play particularly well," said Markiewicz.

North County's Chris Mangum, the county's leading pass receiver as a junior, is the latest in a long line of Mangums who have played high school football in Anne Arundel County.Mangum paces the county with 23 receptions for 323 yards (14.0 per catch) and three touchdowns, and his numbers stand third in the metro area. The 6-foot, 170-pound split end caught 28 passes for 350 yards and three touchdowns as a sophomore on the Knights' 4A state championship team.Chris' grandfather, Big John Mangum, a Brooklyn Park legend who died about 10 years ago, was the patriarch of a football-playing family and endeared his boys to the game.
