Marty Windisch didn't break any records at Manchester Valley High School. When he enrolled in August 2009, there simply weren't any records to break. After one year at North Carroll High School, Windisch stepped into a new school and a fledgling athletic program. Three years later, he left Manchester Valley as the top male student-athlete in the school's brief history. He now holds a few records, too. But Windisch's impact on goes beyond athletics. In a letter sent on Jan. 24 to Board President Jennifer Seidel, Getty cited hazardous road conditions that confronted students, parents and school bus drivers on Jan. 23 in the Taneytown, Manchester and Hampstead communities as an example that demonstrates the need for such a zone.

It was encouraging to read that a group of residents in Eldersburg and Sykesville were able to attract county officials and Jeff Degitz, the director of the county's Department of Recreation and Parks, to form a group to decide future trails in the South Carroll area. It appears this group, with support of county resources, will develop a feasibility study to obtain grant funding for trails that will serve residents in the local area. This will allow many of the unique destinations along the routes 26 and 32 corridors to be tied together, allowing citizens a healthy, safe and cost-saving alternative to travel by auto.
