This is simply a letter of thanks to the individuals in the Laurel community who are helping me grow the Mance Foundation. In particular, I am especially grateful to Chief McLaughlin and every person in the Laurel City Police Department for their valuable input and community engagement in helping the organization carry out its first Tour de Laurel bike ride and 5k walk fundraisers. I cannot say thank you enough to them for volunteering their time to help keep the participants safe during these fundraisers.

There's a difference in the Darrel Mance who last year became Woodlawn's first state champ, and the one who will take the mat in Tuesday's tri-match at Catonsville with No. 10 Owings Mills.Mance, a 6-foot-2, 230-pound heavyweight, has added 10 pounds. His powerful arms bench-press 300 pounds -- 20 more than last year. And he's more experienced after a summer with the Northwest Wrestling Club, winning state and AAU freestyle titles -- the latter Hershey, Pa. -- under coaches Kenny Taylor and Cornell Bass.

Woodlawn graduate Darrel Mance, a two-time state wrestling champion, accepted a full scholarship last Sunday to wrestle and play football at Eastern Michigan University.Mance played so impressively at defensive end in last Sunday's Chesapeake All-Star Football Classic, in which Team Maryland beat Northern Virginia, 20-16, that a recruiter signed him before he left the Memorial Stadium field."I've been considering them for a long time because, of all the schools who were considering me, they seemed the most genuinely interested in my situation," said Mance, 6 feet 2, 260 pounds.

In neither style nor size does Woodlawn wrestler Darrell Mance resemble most heavyweights.Unlike the typical big guys who must pin or be pinned before losing steam, the quick-moving Mance trains to go the distance.Take last week's 10-4 victory over Randallstown heavyweight Jevon Dolan, which secured the Warriors' 33-32 upset of the then No. 7-ranked Rams."He was fast, but he didn't have the knowledge. Quickness and knowledge are No. 1, so I just kind of predicted what he would do," said Mance, who is 6 feet 2, 221 pounds.

Concert entrepreneur John Tegler knows how to put a show together - either vintage jazz or big band. He just calls on a musicians' who's-who among his friends. Last Friday night, however, was a new experience for Tegler, known as "Dr. Jazz" on WEAA-FM in Baltimore. He told a capacity audience at the Rams Head's On Stage room that he had always wanted to offer an evening of jazz legends. Then he stepped off the stage and let "Christmas Jazz in Annapolis" begin. Tegler delivered for the 250 spectators with headliners Junior Mance (Julian Clifford Mance Jr.)
