A man posing as a customer at a 7-Eleven in Severn early yesterday robbed the store of an undisclosed amount of money, county police said.Mesfin Bodea, an employee of the store in the 2600 block of Annapolis Road, told police the man walked in about 1: 30 a.m. and brought some items to the counter. When Bodea opened the register, the man pulled out a black handgun and demanded money, police said.Bodea handed over money and the man fled. The suspect is described as white, about 30 years old, 6 feet tall with a medium build and a red goatee.

Howard County police are looking for the man who robbed the Eastern Savings Bank in Ellicott City on Friday.The man walked into the bank, in the 10000 block of U.S. 40, and announced a robbery, a police report said.Police said the man, who was armed with a handgun, was given an undisclosed amount of cash and walked out of the building.He was seen leaving the scene in a late-model, blue American-made car, police said.Pub Date: 11/18/97

A county Circuit Court judge sentenced a drunken bank robber to four years in prison yesterday.A plea agreement reached last month limited the sentence for John Wayne Newman, 36, to five years. Assistant State's Attorney Anne Colt Leitess had sought the full five-year term from Judge Lawrence H. Rushworth.Newman and Robert George Pawley, 31, neither with a fixed address, both pleaded guilty to one count of robbery. Four lesser charges were dropped.The two men robbed a Linthicum bank on a lark and wobbled away on bicycles, but police caught them minutes later.

A man robbed the AAA Travel Agency in Columbia Friday, Howard County police said.The agency is in the 10800 block of Little Patuxent Parkway in Hickory Ridge village.Just after 1: 30 p.m., according to a police report, a man entered the business and handed the cashier a note asking for money.Believing that the robber had a gun, the cashier handed over $700 in cash. Police said the man asked for the note back before leaving on foot.Police described the robber as a 6-foot-2 black male with a thin face and wearing a white T-shirt, baseball cap and sunglasses.

Howard County police are looking for a man who robbed the Crestar Bank on U.S. 40 in Ellicott City on Tuesday afternoon.Police said a man walked into the bank in the 9000 block of U.S. 40 at 1: 13 p.m. Tuesday and approached a teller station, pulled a handgun from his jacket and announced the robbery.After the teller gave the thief an undisclosed amount of money, the man fled.No one was hurt.The robber is described as black, 30 years old, with short hair, a goatee, crooked teeth and a small mouth.

Baltimore County police are canvassing Catonsville for a man who robbed a Farmers & Commercial Bank branch on Frederick Avenue between Bloomsbury Avenue and Bishops Lane yesterday morning, police said.At 9: 15 a.m., shortly after the bank opened at 9 a.m., a man entered the bank and demanded money from a teller. No customers were in the branch at the time. When the teller did not comply immediately, the man started shouting but did not threaten the teller or show a weapon, according to police.

A man who robbed New Windsor State Bank on Dec. 12 may be the man who fled Saturday with an undisclosed amount from the NationsBank branch in Mount Airy, police said.Witnesses described the robber Saturday as white, about 6 feet tall. He has a distinctively long, pointy nose and was wearing sunglasses and a dark knit cap.As in the New Windsor incident, the man handed a teller a note demanding money Saturday. No weapon was displayed and no one was injured, police said. The same NationsBank branch was robbed Dec. 6, but police do not believe the incidents are related.

A Columbia man who robbed a bank to avoid paying child support was sentenced in Howard County Circuit Court Friday to six years in prison with a suspension of all but the year he has already served in jail.Peter Laurence Axelrod, 49, of the 5700 block of Stevens Forest Road in Columbia's Oakland Mills village was also ordered to continue receiving counseling through Howard County Health Department's mental health services.In suspending Axelrod's sentence, Howard County Circuit Judge James B. Dudley said he didn't believe that Axelrod would repeat a crime like the robbery of the First National Bank at Oakland Mills Village Center in September 1995.

Howard County police have released a description of a man who robbed a High's convenience store in Jessup Thursday afternoon.The man is described as a 28- to 30-year-old black male, 5-feet-8-inches tall with a dark complexion and a light mustache. The man was wearing a turquoise hat and a white T-shirt.He robbed the High's in the 7900 block of U.S. 1 about 4: 45 p.m. Thursday and took an unknown amount of money after telling the clerk he had a gun in a bag he was carrying.Pub Date: 8/19/96
