State prison officials are continuing to investigate the fatal beating of a 39-year-old man who was apparently attacked as he lay sleeping in his bed at the Baltimore Pre-Release Unit on Aug. 18. Douglas A. Smith of O'Donnell Heights had three months left to serve on a parole violation when he was found mortally wounded in his dormitory bed. He lapsed into a coma after emergency surgery and died Aug. 23 at Maryland Shock Trauma Center. Prison officials said Smith appeared to have been beaten in the head with a stool.

A Prince George's County teen-ager accused of assaulting a man who confronted him and a friend in North Laurel about an earlier robbery pleaded guilty to an assault charge yesterday. Howard County Circuit Judge Diane O. Leasure sentenced Dominic Timothy Brown, 18, of Laurel to five years in prison, but suspended all but 152 days - the amount of time he has been in jail since his arrest. He also was placed on three years of supervised probation. Brown and a friend, Dorsel Nathaniel Knight, were charged in the stabbing and beating June 29 of Jason Martino, 21, who sought them out after his girlfriend's brother was robbed.

Baltimore police believe a man was beaten to death last night at the Old Town Mall in East Baltimore shortly before 7 p.m. Officers responding to the courtyard between the mall and the Bel Air Market found an unidentified man in his late 30s or early 40s with severe injuries to his face, according to a homicide detective. The man was taken to Johns Hopkins Hospital where he was pronounced dead about 7:30 p.m. Police at the scene said officers initially thought the man had been shot in the face, but later said it appeared that the victim was beaten with an unknown object.

A 53-year-old man was beaten with a pipe and stabbed to death late Friday at a group home in the 3600 block of West Belvedere Ave. in Pimlico, police said yesterday.Police said the victim, whom they have not identified, was attacked after an argument about 10: 30 p.m. Friday.Kaghal Coleman, 21, also a resident of the home for the homeless and mentally ill, was arrested early Saturday and charged with first-degree murder. He had turned himself over to Baltimore County police, authorities said.

A Brooklyn Park man was beaten unconscious and robbed New Year's Eve by two men as he walked through his neighborhood, county police said.William J. Duvall, 43, was treated at Harbor Hospital Center for several cuts to his head.Duvall told police he was walking along Townsend Avenue shortly after 6: 30 p.m. when a man approached and another man sneaked up and began beating him, police said.Duvall was knocked to the ground and beaten unconscious, police said. When he regained consciousness, he realized money was missing from his wallet, police said.

A Millersville man was beaten and robbed Tuesday in the Old Mill area by an acquaintance, county police said.Joshua Lee Armstrong, 19, told police he was walking with his girlfriend to her car on Millwright Court when a man he knew as Jason approached and asked his name.The man cursed at Armstrong and threatened to beat him, police said. He pushed Armstrong to the ground, punched him in the face, took $40 from his pants pocket and ran away, police said.Police did not have a complete description of the man.Pub Date: 10/10/96
