Sometimes, Richard "Rico" White says, parents get so strung out and desperate that they push their kids to join gangs to guarantee a supply of drugs. The kids go along, White says, but most don't want any part of the gang life. That's where he comes in. He'll catch wind of a boy or a girl in trouble - someone who joined a gang but now wants out - and he'll negotiate deals with a gang leader allowing them to leave. White, who is 44, developed a talent for this several years ago. He's the new operator of the Hollywood Diner in downtown Baltimore.

Freedom Writers has been turning into a word-of-mouth hit at the multiplexes just as Gridiron Gang arrives on DVD Tuesday. Gridiron Gang stars Dwayne "the Rock" Johnson as the real-life juvenile probation officer Sean Porter, who molded tough underage felons into a football team, the Mustangs. At Camp Kilpatrick, a "last-chance" juvenile-detention facility nestled against California's Santa Monica Mountains, Porter convinces his charges that they can change from losers to winners - if they overcome gang allegiances and put the team he forms first.

A man was killed Tuesday after he was hit by a vehicle in Northwest Baltimore, police said. The 62-year-old man was standing in the median strip of the 3500 block of Park Heights Ave. just before 3:30 p.m. when he was struck by a passing vehicle, according to Detective Nicole Monroe, a Baltimore Police Department spokeswoman. The man leaned forward as the vehicle passed and was struck in the head by a side mirror, she said. He was pronounced dead at Sinai Hospital. His name will be released after his family is notified of his death.

Two county police officers talked a distraught man out of jumping off a Waterford Road overpass onto westbound Route 100 about 2:30 p.m. Sunday, police said.Officer Eric A. Snair and Cpl. Donald R. Pearson arrived on the scene to find the man standing outside the fence on the overpass, police said.Corporal Pearson talked to the man for about 20 minutes and persuaded him not to jump. He was taken to North Arundel Hospital for an emergency psychiatric evaluation by Officer Snair, police said.

Eastern District officers arrested two men Friday night after they found two handguns and a stun gun in a truck registered to one of them on the parking lot of Chesterfield Plaza, county police said.Officer Bernard Watson and Officer Paul Grossman drove to the parking lot shortly after 11 p.m. after an anonymous caller complained of some men with a handgun. They saw one man standing outside a 1994 red Ford pickup truck and another man sitting inside. The truck was registered to the man standing outside, who gave the officers permission to search the vehicle.

County police arrested two Glen Burnie men Friday on drug and assault charges after an officer saw them drinking alcohol on a public street.Gerald Wallace, 21, of the first block of Phyllis Drive was charged with possession and possession with intent to distribute marijuana, resisting arrest and assault and battery. Donjell Harris, 21, of the 8000 block of Harris Court was charged with having an open container of alcohol in public.Police said officers were patrolling Hiddenbrook Drive in Glen Burnie about 7: 30 p.m. when they saw a man standing beside a 1986 Honda Accord drinking beer with the driver.

A Gambrills woman was hit in the face Monday by a burglar she surprised in her house, county police said.Esther Ferrera, 53, was cut on the right side of her face, but refused medical treatment.Ferrera told police that she was in the basement of her home exercising about 6: 30 p.m. when she heard noises upstairs. She thought it was her cat, but when she went to investigate, she saw a man standing in her dining room, police said.Ferrera said the man started to leave, then turned and told her, "I want money," according to police.

Police were attempting to identify a man who was fatally struck by a car Tuesday night while standing in the middle of a heavily traveled street in Northwest Baltimore's Howard Park neighborhood. Witnesses reported seeing the man standing in the middle of the southbound lanes of the 5000 block of Liberty Heights Ave. about 11 p.m. and leaning over, said Agent Donny Moses, a city police spokesman. The driver of a 2002 Jaguar swerved to avoid the man who, witnesses said, appeared to step into the path of the vehicle and was struck by its driver's side bumper, Moses said.

A 29-year-old woman was raped Thursday morning in the 3700 block of Greenmount Ave. in North Baltimore, police said. The victim said she woke up in her bed just after 4:30 a.m. with a man standing over her, said police spokesman Detective Kevin Brown. The man sexually assaulted her and fled, Brown said. Two children were home, asleep, during the incident and were not harmed. Police ask anyone with any information about this crime to call Metro Crime Stoppers at 1-866-7LOCKUP.

Trial opened Tuesday in a murder case against a teenager accused of killing a 23-year-old man in Middle River last summer. Avar Cornell Tunstall, 18, of the 4200 block of Maple Path Circle near White Marsh is charged with first-degree murder in the death of Terrell Scott in the first block of Maple Drive. The two appeared to have had some kind of argument, Baltimore County Circuit Court documents say. Baltimore County police found Scott about 11:48 p.m. Aug. 25 suffering from gunshot wounds, according to documents.

The off-duty Secret Service agent was shopping with his wife and two daughters at Westfield Annapolis mall when a fistfight that broke out among rival teens erupted in gunfire. As many as nine young men circled another man "like a pack of hyenas and started attacking him," the agent testified yesterday in Anne Arundel County Circuit Court. A member of the detail that protects the president and vice president, Paul Buta yelled, "Police! Break it off!" Moments later, he was hit by a bullet near the hip, a 16-year-old Annapolis boy had taken a gunshot to the leg and Buta drew his service weapon and fired at the gunman.

A woman was fatally shot and a man slightly wounded last night as they sat in a car parked at the edge of Gwynns Falls Park in West Baltimore, city police said. Investigators were attempting to determine the relationship of the shooting victims, whose names were being withheld. Police said the pair, both from West Virginia, came to the city to meet with a man about money and that a dispute broke out before the shootings. Southwestern District officers responding to gunfire in the 800 block of Hilton St. near Edgewood Street about 5:40 p.m. found the car riddled with bullet holes and a man standing outside it, bleeding from a bullet wound to a hand.

A 76-year-old man was assaulted and robbed by a man who broke into his home in the 7600 block of Spencer Road early Wednesday, county police reported.Joseph Lawson was awakened by a sound at 4:30 a.m. He walked into the kitchen and found a man standing there, the police report said.He then picked up the phone to call the police, but the man attacked him. After a brief struggle, Mr. Lawson ran into the bedroom.His attacker knocked a dresser over on top of him and demanded money, police said.
