A woman who got into a stranger's car in Laurel Tuesday night fought off the man by poking him in the face with a stick after he hit her with a metal flashlight, county police said.Rachel Jean Hurst, 18, of the 1600 block of Lorimer Road in Glen Burnie was in stable condition yesterday afternoon at North Arundel Hospital, a spokeswoman said.Police said she accepted a ride from a man on Route 1 about 9:50 p.m., police said. The man told her he had to stop for gas and pick up something from work, police said.

A Pasadena man was arrested yesterday and charged in the assault and attempted robbery of a Pizza Boli's manager who was beaten in the face by a man wielding a chair, police said.William Charlie Griffin, 38, of the 200 block of Meadow Road was being held last night pending a bail hearing before a District Court commissioner.Police said the assault occurred about 3: 25 p.m. Friday when a man went into the Pizza Boli's shop in the 1300 block of Blair Road in Odenton and said, "Give me my money or I'll take it," a police report said.

An elderly couple arrived at their home in the 500 block of Hampton Lane in Hampton Village last night and surprised a burglar who tied them up, put them in a closet and continued looting the house.Baltimore County police said the couple, Harold Burns, 83, and his companion, Ruth Kammer, 76, were not injured.Police said Mr. Burns and Ms. Kammer arrived at their home, off Dulaney Valley Road just north of the Beltway, at 9:45 p.m. and opened the front door. They were confronted by a man who had broken in through a side bedroom window.

State police are searching for two people wanted in the armed robbery of Weis Market in Mount Airy late Thursday.Witnesses said a man hid in the store, then emerged brandishing a pistol to accost night-shift employees at 10: 30 p.m. He demanded and gained entry to the store safe, police said.The man was described as white, about 25 years old, 5 feet 6 inches tall, weighing 130 pounds and wearing dark clothing, a white baseball cap and a dark ski mask that partially hid his face. He carried a citizens band radio and used it to talk to an accomplice outside the store, witnesses said.

Police say they have found the hunter who shot two Millersville men Monday while they were fishing at a pond near an upscale neighborhood.Rob Martin, 23, and John Mirowski, 44, both of the 8300 block of Westside Drive, suffered buckshot wounds and were taken to the Maryland Shock Trauma Center.Martin, hit in his back, remained in serious but stable condition; Mirowski, hit in his left leg and elbow, was treated and released.Police would not divulge the name of the man who says he fired the shot, because he has not been charged with a crime.

Members of the county Sheriff's Department, joined by the state police helicopter, Westminster police and several K-9 units, searched the grounds of Westminster High School and Carroll County Career and Technology Center on Washington Road for a man who escaped from a sheriff's deputy yesterday.Officials said a deputy was trying to serve a warrant on the man, whose identity was not available, at a home on Washington Lane when the man fled. He ran toward the school grounds, officials said.

A series of carjackings -- two of them apparently committed by the same suspects -- led yesterday to the arrest of two men, the search for two others and kept police busy in three jurisdictions.At about 1: 15 Friday morning, three men with guns approached the truck driver delivering bread to a McDonald's in the 2100 block of York Road in Timonium, Baltimore County police spokesman Bill Toohey said.The trio tied up the driver and put him in the back of his truck. Armed with the guns, and using the driver's hand truck and a load of buns, the trio then tried to enter the restaurant, but employees wouldn't let them in.The three then untied the deliveryman and forced him to drive to Greenside Drive, near Cockeysville, where they left him tied up and gagged in his truck.

Montford Ave. about 5 p.m. Sunday when he persuaded her to accompany him into an alley, where he forced her to disrobe and raped her. The man fled. The woman was treated at Mercy Medical Center.Burglary: Someone entered a house in the 2200 block of Cecil Ave. through a basement door Sunday and stole a compact disc player, 25-inch television, videocassette recorder, stereo equipment, three watches and $25.Theft from vehicle: A cellular phone, leather jacket and a small bag containing change, all valued at $500, were stolen Sunday from a 1999 Dodge van parked in the 800 block of E. Eager St.Robbery: A girl, 14, was in the 500 block of E. North Ave. about 11 p.m. Saturday when a teen-age boy shot her in the head with a BB rifle, shoved her to the ground and stole her boots, jacket and $10.Arson: Police were seeking two occupants of a black Jeep seen leaving the 4300 block of Pulaski Highway about 5 a.m. Sunday after a 1994 GMC truck was set afire at U-Haul Inc. Damage to the truck was estimated at $5,000.

Armed man robs Odenton video storeA man armed with a long-barreled revolver robbed an Odenton video store of an undisclosed amount of money Thursday night, county police said.The man walked into Odenton Video, in the 1100 block of Annapolis Road, about 9:15 p.m. and asked the clerk, Deborah )) Ann Grimm, 36, for change for a $10 bill. As the clerk opened the register, the man pulled out a silver revolver and ordered her to put cash from the drawer into a blue plastic bag he had hidden under his shirt.

A man found lying unconscious on a road in Jessup early Sunday was probably the victim of a hit-and-run accident, Howard County rescue officials said.Emergency workers found Donald Yount, a man in his 30s with no known address, in the 8300 block of Barkwood Court about 2 a.m. Sunday, said Lt. Dan Merson, a spokesman for the Howard County Department of Fire and Rescue.A state police MedEvac helicopter flew Mr. Yount to the Maryland Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore, where he was in critical but stable condition yesterday.
