A 23-year-old Dundalk man was shot yesterday after he pointed a handgun at police, ignored demands to drop the weapon and ran away, Baltimore County police officials said. Police said they received a call at 9: 15 a.m. from employees at Baltimore County Savings Bank, saying a man had attempted to cash a forged check. When they arrived, officers found a man -- who matched the description bank employees gave -- acting suspiciously at a Rite Aid drugstore in the Merritt Park Shopping Center, said Cpl. Vickie Warehime, county police spokeswoman.

A short time later, Officer Philip A. Earp saw a man fitting the robber's description. The man was returned to the scene and was identified by the victim. Earp recovered the victim's ring and a 12-inch knife. Tiefel Backus, 18, of the 1800 block of Wilkens Ave. was charged with armed robbery.

Baltimore police shot and killed a Park Heights man armed with a semiautomatic handgun yesterday, a police spokeswoman said.James Hill, 29, of the 3400 block of Royce Ave. died at 12: 30 p.m. at Sinai Hospital. He had been shot in the shoulder and stomach, Agent Angelique Cook-Hayes said.Police received reports of a man with a gun in the 4900 block of Denmore Ave. about 10: 30 a.m. yesterday but did not find anyone fitting the description. They encountered Hill a short time later in the 3200 block of Woodland Ave., near Park Heights Avenue, Cook-Hayes said.

A man armed with a knife robbed an Annapolis service station of an undetermined amount of money early yesterday, county police said.Pamela L. Offer, a clerk at the Shell station in the 2500 block of Riva Road, told police that the man walked into the station about 1 a.m. and asked for cigarettes.When Offer opened the cash drawer, the man pulled a large knife and demanded money, police said. A man robbed a First National Bank branch in Harford County yesterday by claiming to have a bomb, which forced the evacuation of the bank and a supermarket before investigators determined the device was a fake.The man walked into the branch in the 900 block of Pulaski Highway in Havre de Grace about 11: 45 a.m., demanded all the available cash and threatened to detonate a bomb he claimed was inside a bank bag that he placed on a teller's counter, said W. Faron Taylor, deputy state fire marshal.

A Crofton woman was robbed at gunpoint of her handbag Wednesday in Severn, county police said.Nora R. Koch, 24, told police she was getting out of her car in the 1800 block of Hawk Court about 11: 30 p.m. when a man walked up, pointed a gun and demanded money.After Koch gave the man her bag, he ran toward Pioneer City. A gunman robbed the Popeye's restaurant in Severn of an undisclosed amount of money, county police said.Samneka Brandford, manager of the store in the 2600 block of Annapolis Road, said the bandit walked in about 10: 30 p.m. Sunday, went behind the counter and pulled out a long silver handgun, ordering employees to the floor.The gunman handed Brandford a bag and ordered her to take all the money from the registers, police said. She complied, and the man fled toward a Denny's restaurant, police said.

A man armed with a gun robbed a Brooklyn Park General Nutrition Center store of an undisclosed amount of money Friday, county police said.The man walked into the store in the 6700 block of Ritchie Highway shortly before 3 p.m., picked up two items and walked to the cash register.As the clerk rang up the purchase, the man put a purple hip pack on the counter and pointed a small blue handgun at the clerk, police said.The man demanded money and told the clerk to put it in the hip pack, police said.
