An off-duty city police officer shot and killed a 41-year-old man yesterday in a corridor of a Northwest Baltimore movie theater, where the man pointed a pellet gun resembling a .357-caliber Magnum revolver at the officer, police said.Officer Harold Carey, 23, who was at the theater to see a movie with his wife, discharged all 17 rounds of ammunition from his 9-mm Glock service pistol, killing Michael R. Goodman, a police report said. Police officials said it appears Mr. Goodman was shot a minimum of 13 or 14 times, although an exact count cannot be confirmed until an autopsy is performed.

An 8-year-old girl said a man tried to abduct her in the 8500 block of Jenkins Road in Riviera Beach yesterday afternoon, but she broke free after biting him on an arm, the police said. While waiting for a friend, the girl told police, the 20- to 30- year-old man tried to pull her into his sport-utility vehicle just before 4 p.m. by grabbing her hair. The girl rushed home safely. The man was of medium build with short, curly brown hair and drove a blue or green SUV, possibly an Isuzu Rodeo.

Howard County police were looking for a man they say robbed a cab driver Saturday night in Columbia. According to police, Alexander Bofah was approached by a man in the Long Reach Village Center parking lot around 8 p.m. seeking a ride. After the man got into the cab and Bofah began to drive away, the suspect put a knife to Bofah's neck and demanded cash, police said. After a struggle, Bofah, 38, gave him an undisclosed amount of money, and the suspect fled. Bofah then called police. He described the man as black, about 5 feet 9 inches, between 25 and 30 years old, with short black hair.

City police are investigating a sexual assault of a female jogger, who was attacked by a man armed with a knife in Fells Point Friday morning. Police are unclear of the exact location but say a woman in her 20s was attacked between 5 a.m. and 7 a.m. by a man who was possibly wearing a mask and armed with a knife. The victim received medical treatment and has met with investigators, police said. She has met with TurnAround, Inc. a victim advocacy group that has partnered with the police department to investigate sex crimes.

County police arrested a Baltimore man Monday in the robbery of a 7-Eleven convenience store in the 4000 block of Ritchie High- way.Police said a man walked into the store about 3:45 a.m. Monday, pushed the clerk to the ground, threatened to kill him with a knife and ordered the clerk to reveal how to open the cash register. When the clerk complied, the man opened it, took an undisclosed amount of money and ran.Police later found a man fitting the robber's description across the street from the store, and the clerk identified the suspect as the robber.

A man who may have been armed with a handgun robbed a Taco Bell in Linthicum Sunday afternoon of an undisclosed amount of cash, county police said yesterday.The man walked into the restaurant in the 5100 block of Raynor Ave. shortly after 1:30 p.m. He pointed his right hand, which was wrapped in a dark shirt, at the cashier and demanded money, police said.The cashier complied, and the man ran out the front door and toward a motel in the back of the restaurant. The cashier told police that the man appeared to have a gun.Needle used as weapon in $50 robberyTwo men held a needle to the throat of a Baltimore bar owner Monday night and robbed him of $50 after he drove them to a house in Ferndale, county police said yesterday.

A federal jury in Baltimore yesterday convicted a former State Department security officer of illegally exporting 38 handguns to the Dominican Republic, bribery and illegally bringing undeclared cash into the United States.George R. Mitchell, 43, a former Baltimore policeman who was security officer for the U.S. Embassy from 1988 to 1990, was convicted of violating the Arms Export Control Act by buying the guns and sending them into the Dominican Republic without the required export license.

Anne Arundel County police were investigating yesterday whether a Crofton police officer was justified in shooting a man allegedly armed with a screwdriver Saturday night. John Woodall, a six-year veteran of the Crofton police force, shot the man once in the lower abdomen, county police officials said. The man, identified as James Timmons, ran toward the officer holding a screwdriver in a "threatening manner," Officer Charles Ravenell, a county police spokesman, said. Timmons, who told police he lives in Annapolis, was in serious but stable condition at Maryland Shock Trauma Center yesterday, a hospital spokeswoman said.

An Ellicott City man died yesterday after cutting himself while trying to break into his own home, police said.William Allen Spencer, 29, of the 3600 block of Mount Ida Drive was found in a pool of blood about 11:15 a.m.He apparently had locked himself out of his house and had broken a rear basement window to get back in, police said.When he reached in the window to unlock the door, he cut his arm, slashing a major artery.He was taken to St. Agnes Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, police said.
