Baltimore Orioles manager Frank Robinson, in town for the Tops in Sports banquet, discussed "general things" with general Roland Hemond and assistant general manager Doug Melvin yesterday and will meet with president Larry Lucchino today. The manager said he "wouldn't talk about somebody else' players" but added he still desires "a big bat in the middle of the lineup. It's very important to add some proven offense."Hemond had a brief conversation with Houston Astros general manager Bill Wood, presumably about first baseman Glenn Davis, when he returned from vacation, but said he is concentrating on contract negotiations with current Orioles at the moment.

COLLEGE PARK - In the life of a college football player, the bye week offers the rare chance to breathe. For a few days, things slow down. This week, Maryland's football staff is not only trying to prepare for next week's game against Virginia, it's also working overtime to nail down a recruiting class that could be the best yet for third-year coach Ralph Friedgen.

Reyes Cruz Escalante's role was the most minimal of the three men charged in the death of Antonio Ayala, a fact that led prosecutors to seek a prison term below the 12 to 20 years recommended by state sentencing guidelines, said Assistant State's Attorney Jim Dietrich.
