Sloshing through a persistent drizzle, No. 14 Perry Hall (12-2-1) scored twice in the first half and went on to defeat Patterson, 4-0, in the Class 4A North regional final, a soggy spectacle that was more mosh pit than soccer game. When the sprawling stopped, Patterson's best player was on his way to a hospital, and Perry Hall was on its way to the state semifinals."They handled the conditions better than we did," said Patterson coach Derek Maki, who made a noontime decision not to postpone.

Sue Hi Hong, known about town as Suzie, is a little bit superstitious. So she took it as a sign when she found an ornamental gong that was a perfect fit for a restaurant space she was considering in Hampden. The location, Hong knew, was just right for Suzie's Soba. You might recognize that name from Hong's restaurant in the Belvedere. Since business there is slow in the evening, Hong had been searching for a site at which to open a dinner-only restaurant, one that was small enough for her to handle the cooking.

Maguro in Glen Burnie is something of a rarity. It's a sushi bar that doesn't pretend to be anything else. There are just a few cooked items on the menu, not counting the cooked toppings for sushi - smoked eel, steamed shrimp and little omelets folded into neat bundles. What you will find here is exquisitely fresh, artfully prepared sushi and, if you must, Korean food through a surprising arrangement with an adjacent restaurant.Sushi chef and owner Pong Yang and his wife, Angela, opened Maguro in February.

Some starred on their high school athletic teams. Some barely received any playing time. But each served his country and died in Iraq or Afghanistan. A former swim team star was killed while defusing a roadside bomb; a one-time running back sacrificed himself so that his comrades might live. During one 14-month period in 2005-2006, at least six former athletes from Baltimore-area high schools - Marines, sailors and soldiers - died in the war. The eldest was 31 years old, the youngest 20. To a man, they carried with them overseas the love of sport.
