In the theater, an out-of-town tryout allows collaborators to work out the kinks before going into New York, or London. John Madden and Gwyneth Paltrow had a different experience with Proof. Their tryout wasn't out-of-town; it was out-of-medium. In 2002, director Madden approached Paltrow about "having a go" at David Auburn's popular play about a Chicago mathematician's daughter and her secrets, in a stage production in London. Madden and Paltrow already had a fine rapport: Paltrow won an Academy Award for her performance in Shakespeare in Love, the multiple Oscar winner directed by Madden.

For nearly two decades, the Rev. Denis J. Madden has worked in some of the most difficult places on earth. As Jerusalem director of the Catholic Near East Welfare Association, and then as second-in-charge of the agency, the conflict-resolution specialist tiptoed through the minefield of political, religious and ethnic sensitivities that is the modern Middle East. The experience should prove useful to him in his return to Baltimore. Madden, 65, a licensed clinical psychologist and Benedictine priest, is to be ordained bishop today during Mass at the Cathedral of Mary our Queen.

Fourth down and seven. Patrick Blair's Indianapolis Colts are losing, 13-8, with just two minutes left in the game. Thirteen-year-old Patrick, at the controls of an Xbox at an Electronics Boutique store yesterday, tells his friend and competitor, Colby Giacubeno, "I'm going up the gut, I'm telling you right now." Colby, also 13, replies, "I'm sending everybody." Patrick passes the ball, Colby intercepts and runs it back for a touchdown. "See ya! See ya!" Colby taunts as one of his Atlanta Falcons sprints down the field.

John Madden's bombastic characterizations and down-home homilies have earned him a stunning 14 Emmy Awards over a 25-year career in sports broadcasting. Now those reverberating traits will help ensure he remains the pre-eminent voice of the NFL when the league shuffles its television lineup after the 2005 season. NBC announced yesterday Madden has signed a six-year contract to be lead analyst for its Sunday night telecasts when the network resumes NFL coverage in 2006. "In my opinion, he's the best analyst of any kind in sports television history," Dick Ebersol, chairman of NBC Universal Sports & Olympics, said in a teleconference.

The Vatican chose a Catholic relief official and former Baltimore priest yesterday to be the city's next auxiliary bishop, overseeing 52 parishes and 54,862 Catholics as the urban vicar of the archdiocese. Bishop-elect Denis J. Madden, the first U.S. bishop to be appointed by Pope Benedict XVI, worked in the city as a counselor to priests in the 1970s and 1980s before he embarked on relief and conflict-resolution missions. Those travels led him to Israel, Lebanon and, most recently, New York, where he oversaw a Vatican relief agency.

On a recent sunny afternoon, Chris Madden frowned at a sisal carpet in her living room where, the day before, a dog had an "accident." Madden, a syndicated columnist to 400 newspapers, host for eight years of HGTV's Interiors by Design, and decorator for such celebrities as Katie Couric and Oprah Winfrey has, of course, styled her rambling house in West-chester County, N.Y., to a fare-thee-well. Yet one of her West Highland terriers, Lola or Winnie, was not showing her mistress the respect she deserves.
