Their gypsy-like existence may have cost the Bowie Baysox nearly $1 million in revenue from refunded tickets and the loss of billboard advertising, program sales and concessions, but it hasn't affected their play on the field."

The Bowie Baysox didn't miss Armando Benitez.Actually, Benitez has the highest ERA in the Baysox bullpen since his return to the Double-A team Friday. Benitez, who now shares the Baysox's closer role with Joe Borowski, has given up a run and two hits in his first 2 2/3 innings back.Borowski has five saves and a win this month, not allowing a run while striking out 18 in his past 11 2/3 innings."I am very fortunate in that I have two closers," Baysox manager Pete Mackanin said. "If I had to put together a team from scratch, I would want this situation everywhere I managed."

FREDERICK -- Have team. Will travel.Blame the harsh winter for the predicament that confronts the Bowie Baysox, the Double-A team that seemingly will be playing everywhere in the area except its own home until Prince George's County Stadium is ready for baseball.Construction delays because of the weather have forced the Baysox to locate their base in Frederick and to schedule early-season games at Grove Stadium here, at Judy Johnson Field in Wilmington, Del., and at the University of Maryland's Shipley Field.

It has been nearly a decade since a hands-on owner and a veteran manager parted ways, resulting in chronic losing for a once-proud franchise. This story, though, has nothing to do with Davey Johnson and Peter Angelos. And this one could feature a reunion between the manager and owner. On Tuesday, the day the Pittsburgh Pirates fired Lloyd McClendon, St. Louis Cardinals scout Jim Leyland was met at PNC Park by reporters wanting to know if he'd like to again lead the Bucs. "No comment," Leyland said, partially in respect to current interim manager Pete Mackanin.

BOWIE -- The pre-game thunderstorms that pelted surrounding areas spared Prince George's County Stadium last night, so the Bowie Baysox finally settled into their new home. The Baysox celebrated with a 14-6 victory over the Binghamton Mets before an opening-game crowd of 7,142.It was a rousing christening for the still-unfinished 9,000-seat stadium where ushers were wiping construction dust from the seats as the fans were about to enter.Despite a few hitches, Baysox owner Peter Kirk was pleased with the tenor of an opening night which was missing some trappings, but was nonetheless dotted with fireworks in the sky and from the Baysox bats (17 hits)
