Lyle Lovett's been-there-and-back voice alternately strokes the lyrics and falls quiet for empty yet pensive spaces, his images tumbling together in a sad and surreal riff on life, death . . . and Baltimore."

Ollison FILM 'Happy-Go-Lucky' Be the first on your block to see one of the best movies of the year: Mike Leigh's Happy-Go-Lucky, a portrait of an incorrigible optimist who brings the same cheerful inventiveness to the tykes she teaches in primary school and to a dour, troubled driving instructor (with, of course, opposite results)

Lyle Lovett / Pier Six No need to try to peg Lyle Lovett. Just when you thought he was a sure country singer, he'd flip it and dash off a big-band swing album or a folk set or a traditional pop record. He plays Pier Six Concert Pavilion, 731 Eastern Ave., Saturday night at 8. Tickets are $35-$45 and are available through Ticketmaster by calling 410-547-SEAT or by visiting www.ticketmaster.com. Lyle Lovett to sing at Pier SixEven though Nashville was where Lyle Lovett first found a home in the recording industry, he has never been a country singer in the usual sense of the term. For one thing, his delivery is too dry and understated, trading the usual country mannerisms for a singing style that owes more to folk music and jazz; for another, his writing avoids the usual repertoire of heartbreak and happiness, preferring instead to offer an emotional range that stretches from deadpan hilarity to fatalistic despair.

I hate to admit this, but it has recently become clear to me that women are much deeper than men.Or how else do you explain this Lyle Lovett-Julia Roberts deal?Julia Roberts is, of course, beautiful. It's pretty much official. They don't star you in a movie called "Pretty Woman" if anyone is likely to confuse you with, say, a pastrami sandwich. She is, to use the technical term, a babe. But she's so much more than that. Here you've got this glamorous woman who, face it, could have any guy she wants.

Ryan Bingham has been hard to track down for nearly a week. Because he was one of the acts on Cayamo -- a six-day Caribbean cruise featuring fellow country and roots-rock artists such as Emmylou Harris, Patty Griffin and Lyle Lovett -- the Texan singer-songwriter has been unavailable to discuss Mescalito, his national debut on Lost Highway Records. He had no cell-phone signal. And besides, when the ship docked, he and the band wanted to explore the sunny environs. The last thing on his mind was finding a phone to do an interview.

Bjork Selmasongs (Elektra 25332) Lyle Lovett Dr. T & the Women (MCA 688 112 381) These days, pop music soundtracks are mainly about marketing - about using the fame of a hot rock or rap act to add to the buzz around a movie, or about using a movie as a means of breaking a new single. As a result, few of today's pop-based soundtracks contain songs that are actually written to connect with the action on screen. At best, they'll just toss in a phrase vaguely connected to the action - "Asteroid's a-comin'," say, or "Pokemon fight!"
