For people in rural Calvert County, the Calvert Cliffs Nuclear Power Plant has long been an economic rock -- the largest local taxpayer and an important source of jobs. But since Sept. 11, some residents have begun to view the plant differently: Now they see it as something that places them near the center of a potential terrorist target. Perched on a slope overlooking the Chesapeake Bay, with its fragile ecosystem, the plant is less than 50 miles from Washington. Nuclear power experts and a local politician fear that it could face attacks by sea and air. "We've got to be kidding ourselves if we don't think [the plant]

POCOMOKE CITY - Gene Lusby is pretty sure things are looking up for the downtown business district of this riverfront town. Some days, he actually has to search for a parking spot. Lusby and his wife, Joanne, have worked since 1966 from the same brick Market Street storefront. They say the extra traffic is cause for optimism in the two-block commercial center, where recently it seemed that For Sale signs and vacant storefronts were everywhere. And the Lusbys are not alone in thinking that the 300-year-old town, named for the dark and deep river that runs through it, has a shot at recapturing something of the glory days when Pocomoke, population 3,900, served as a hub for much of the Lower Eastern Shore.

Northeast sidearmer Tom Foster seemed to be in command with a 1-run lead in the fifth inning at Glen Burnie and having set down eight batters in a row. That is until he yielded a one-out single to Greg Hammack, followed by an error and the commission of one of baseball's cardinal sins. Foster walked Chris Newton, the No. 9 hitter in the order, to load the bases and open the flood gates. No. 15 ranked Glen Burnie (5-2) went on to score seven runs and added five more in the home half of the sixth to 10-run (mercy rule)

The first big baseball game of the year is set for 4 p.m. tomorrow in Gambrills as third-ranked Severna Park (2-0) comes calling on the No. 5 Arundel Wildcats (2-0). Over the last few years, there have been some epic games between the two teams and quite an intense rivalry has developed. It's the first time, however, that Arundel coach Bernie Walter won't see Jim Pitt in the Falcons dugout. Instead, there'll be Jim McCandless, who succeeded Pitt after the latter's retirement following 26 seasons at Severna Park and 30 years overall (four at Annapolis)

SALISBURY -- A year and a week after she was jailed in the death of her infant son, Erminia Escalante Berdugo walked out of the Wicomico County Detention Center yesterday -- into the waiting arms of supporters who have worked tirelessly for the Guatemalan teen-ager's release. Last month, Berdugo was found incompetent to stand trial after two state health department psychologists determined her to have an IQ between 52 and 62. Yesterday, she smiled and embraced David and Jeannie Lusby, the Queen Anne's County couple who have volunteered to become her guardians.
