NEW YORK - If the heavily hyped Subway Series proved anything, it is that the New York Yankees are the third rail of postseason baseball. It's a bad idea to come in contact with them in October. They won their third consecutive world championship last night with a 4-2 victory over the New York Mets in Game 5 at sold-out Shea Stadium, enhancing their status as the most successful team of their generation and one of the greatest teams in the glorious history of the Yankees' franchise. Who's going to argue after they won their fourth championship in five years and continued to be one of the most dominant teams in World Series history?

Quote: "I wasn't ready to retire. I wanted to give it another chance. My family cried when I told them I'm coming back. ... Dreams come true I guess." - Luis Sojo, back with the Yankees and starting at second base last night after being claimed on waivers Monday It's a fact: Ricky Ledee, with his third team this season, is also wearing his fourth number. He wore No. 17 with the Yankees, Nos. 22 and 23 with the Indians and has No. 12 with the Rangers. Who's hot: The A's have 11 back-to-back homers this year.

NEW YORK -- Four games into the 2000 playoffs, the Seattle Mariners still don't know what it's like to lose. Last night, they became the latest team to threaten a dynasty. Freddy Garcia shut out the New York Yankees on three hits through 6 3/4 innings, and Alex Rodriguez homered to give the Mariners a 2-0 victory in Game 1 of the American League Championship Series. The Yankees have been in this predicament before, having lost the opener of the Division Series and facing elimination by the Oakland Athletics.

ANAHEIM, Calif. -- Joe Torre says that being able to repeat as World Series champions last year after a record-breaking 1998 was "an acid test for this team after winning those 125 games." To the New York Yankees manager, it proved that distractions -- particularly the everyday ones associated with playing in win-now-or-you're-a-bum New York -- mean little to his team. What other people think -- including those who this year say they see gaping holes on a team flecked with gray when they look at the Bombers -- might mean even less.
