A half-dozen chimney fires Saturday and Sunday in Carroll and Frederick counties might have been prevented with more regular cleaning, fire officials said.Chimney fires often occur when wood is burned in a wood stove or fireplace where a deposit of soot or creosote, a wood preservative, has built up inside the chimney or chimney liner, said Chief Dale Lowman of Mount Airy Volunteer Fire Company."That deposit buildup catches fire, and, if there is a crack in the liner or chimney, or it burns hot enough, it can spread through the interior house walls and produce a full-blown house fire," said Lowman, whose company responded Sunday to one of six chimney fires reported within an 18-hour period.

Coach of the YearLinda Kilpatrick, Southern: A second straight trip to the state tournament didn't seem likely for the Bulldogs, who lost three regulars from last year's team -- including standout guard Lindsay Lowman. But Kilpatrick was able to put all the pieces in place, getting contributions from everyone on her roster to get the team to the final four for the 11th time in her 21 years. She has won five state titles, the last coming in 1985. "We lost three very significant team leaders from last year's team, including our leading scorer, Lindsay Lowman.

While the leaders in the Whitbread Round the World Race rounded infamous Cape Horn yesterday, Chessie Racing was finalizing plans to put in to shore near the southern tip of South America for repairs. The stopover inside Cape Horn probably will take Chessie out of contention for a good finish on Leg 5 of the race. Chessie was racing in seventh place, ahead of only Silk Cut (dismasted) and EF Education (severely damaged rig).According to officials with Chessie Racing, the Maryland entry in the Whitbread, the system that runs fresh water and moves water ballast on the 65-foot racer has failed for the second time in a week, and the crew cannot repair the problem with parts on board.

Trustees overseeing Baltimore's troubled $1.5 billion police and fire pension system should hire an attorney and other experts to determine whether their past decisions have breached fiduciary responsibilities to retirees, fire union officials cautioned Tuesday. Speaking to the board, Thomas Lowman, an actuary hired by unions to examine pension finances, said: "The plan is severely underfunded. You have to believe that someone is going to ask how we got here." Trustees were "drawing a big bull's-eye" on themselves, Lowman said, by failing to ask the city to pay the full cost of pension obligations amid concern that the price was unaffordable.
