Scientists are still hoping to learn much from Comet ISON, but as it fizzles, sky watchers who were hoping to see it can get a glimpse of Comet Lovejoy instead. Lovejoy, officialy known as C/2013 R1, came its closest to Earth on Nov. 19, about 37 million miles away, according to EarthSky.org . It is near the constellation Bootes and the bright star Arcturus just over the northeast horizon in the early mornings in December, and you can see it with binoculars. It will get closer to the horizon and harder to spot as the month goes on. Despite the fact that ISON is no longer expected to be bright enough to see with the naked eye, scientists are tracking it as it moves away from the sun. Those at the Space Telescope Science Institute in Baltimore plan to observe it with the Hubble Space Telescope once it moves far enough from the sun's glare.

Big-stage events such as theKonica MinoltaFace-Off Classicat M&T Bank Stadium are usually a showcase for explosive offenses and highlight-reel goals. But four of the six participants at Saturday's Classic feature a defenseman who has been an All-American, and one of the other teams has a player who was on pace for a similar honor in 2011 before a season-ending shoulder injury. That's how important Johns Hopkins junior Tucker Durkin, Virginia redshirt senior Matt Lovejoy, North Carolina senior Charlie McComas , Cornell junior Jason Noble and Princeton senior Chad Wiedmaier are to their respective teams.

Garden designer Ann Lovejoy thinks gardens should offer more pleasure than work. Not an unreasonable idea. But it's a goal that can be surprisingly hard to achieve. How many gardeners actually get to sit on those inviting benches they put in their gardens? She contends that maintaining a lovely garden doesn't have to be back-breaking work -- if you set it up the right way in the beginning. "I'm getting old," the mother of two teen-age sons said during a recent lecture on naturalistic design at the Philadelphia Flower Show.

Hardly anything could be nicer than to pick up your mail and find a check for $1,554.82 -- not one of those that say "You may be a winner," but the kind you can actually put in the bank. With it you could pay off your creditors, take a vacation, get your tires rotated, join the health club. Possibilities abound. But there are a few catches. The check is a loan. By endorsing it, you agree to pay back the money at a 24 percent interest rate. In total, during the next 36 months, you will pay an additional $641.
