ANAHEIM, Calif. -- The Orioles dropped a 4-0 decision to the Angels on Friday night, but injuries to first baseman Chris Davis (right knee) and right-hander Miguel Gonzalez (thumb blister) -- who both exited the game prematurely -- were even more pressing. Here's what Orioles manager Buck Showalter, Davis and Gonzalez said after the game: Buck Showalter On Chris Davis' injury: “I'm sharing his optimism, but its part of it. We lost some good players last year.

When the NCAA selection committee convenes this weekend to review the resumes of teams jockeying for one of the 16 spots in the NCAA tournament, the members will have at their disposal an assortment of numbers to gauge a school's bid strength - including RPI, strength of schedule and quality wins. Loyola coach Charley Toomey thinks the committee should also consider another factor: losses. Only one team among the top 10 in RPI has fewer than three losses (No. 4 Cornell is 12-2)

No. 13 Johns Hopkins wrapped up the regular season with a 9-4 victory over Army Friday night and improved to 9-5. But the program's hopes for a 42nd consecutive NCAA tournament  appearance absorbed another sustained hit that same night. No. 2 Cornell was upended, 14-13, in overtime by No. 12 Princeton in one semifinal of the Ivy League tournament at Cornell in Ithaca, N.Y. The Tigers (9-5) will meet No. 14 Yale (10-4) in Sunday's title game after the Bulldogs defeated No. 18 Penn.

ANAHEIM, Calif. - The Orioles' 4-0 loss to the Los Angeles Angels on Friday night might have come at a greater price. The Orioles' top offensive weapon of the opening month of the season, first baseman Chris Davis, hobbled off the field in the fifth inning with a right knee injury. He is scheduled to get an MRI on Saturday morning. Right-hander Miguel Gonzalez was forced from the game after six innings after opening a blister on his right thumb, putting his next start in jeopardy.

After last Saturday's 8-4 victory over No. 13 Johns Hopkins, No. 5 Loyola was thought to be a lock for an at-large bid to the NCAA tournament if the reigning national champion did not repeat as Eastern College Athletic Conference tournament champions this week. Few expected the Greyhounds to fall to No. 8 Ohio State in a conference tournament semifinal, but that is what happened as the Buckeyes pulled off an 18-11 upset at Hobart in Geneva, N.Y., Thursday night. Now Loyola's tournament profile is in question, and it is an unsettling situation for the players and coach Charley Toomey as they await to hear their fate Sunday night when the NCAA selection committee unveils the 16-team field.

No. 11 Maryland will not skate through Saturday's regular-season finale against visiting Colgate — the Terps must win to cement a seed and a home game in the first round of the NCAA tournament. They will also have another motivation: history. The Raiders have ended Maryland's regular season with losses in 2011 and 2012, forcing the Terps to open the NCAA tournament on the road. It did not terribly damage them as they advanced to the national title game in both years, but coach John Tillman said he has not had to remind Maryland (9-3)

SEATTLE -   After winning three of four in Oakland to begin their season-longest 11-game road trip, the Orioles headed to Seattle looking to capture another series and, perhaps, guarantee a winning West Coast jaunt without yet stepping foot in Southern California. They even caught a major break when Seattle's all-word ace Felix Hernandez was not scheduled to pitch in this series. But just when you think you have baseball figured out, a guy like Aaron Harang can muck things up. Seattle's veteran right-hander, who was fighting for his job, threw six solid innings and the Mariners roughed up Orioles lefty Wei-Yin Chen for an 8-3 blowout in the rubber match of the three-game series.

Towson's 11-8 upset of No. 15 Drexel in one semifinal of the Colonial Athletic Association tournament Wednesday evening means the Tigers will meet No. 9 Penn State in the title game on Friday and get a chance to seize the automatic qualifier to the NCAA tournament. The outcome may also have opened the door a little wider for No. 13 Johns Hopkins. The Blue Jays (8-5) are rated 17th in RPI in the latest rankings produced by the NCAA. The Dragons (11-4) are two spots ahead of Johns Hopkins but could slide down when the RPI list is updated this weekend for the NCAA selection committee.

No one player makes - or breaks - a team. That is especially true for No. 11 Maryland, where the concept of team is emphasized in nearly every comment from the players and coach John Tillman. John Haus is one of the Terps who fully endorses that model. But if anyone is looking to cast blame for the team's recent offensive woes, the senior midfielder is prepared to absorb the criticism. “I think all over, we've been low in production. As a senior, I take some of that on my shoulders,” he said Tuesday.
