Morning, y'all. I've replaced Jon for today's Coffee Companion, where we recap yesterday's sports headlines, because he feels sleep is important, or something. Regardless, your daily trip to the water cooler is approaching, which means you should read up here so you'll have something to talk about while you're there. - Manny Machado was dealt a five-game suspension on Tuesday , and he's already appealing to try and reduce his time off. Our own Peter Schmuck writes that the Orioles hope the third-baseman learns from his mistakes now before it's too late.

INGLEWOOD, Calif. -- Wayne Gretzky is only a signature away from a three-year, $25.5 million contract.Los Angeles Kings owner Bruce McNall signed the contract and gave it to Gretzky last night before the Kings' exhibition game with the Mighty Ducks at Anaheim Arena.Gretzky, the NHL's all-time scoring leader as well as this year with 53 points, said he has not had a chance to give the contract a last look but considers the agreement finalized.

I got in late from Charlottesville and need some coffee badly, but haven't had it yet. So this will be a short Coffee Companion, and it helps that there was really only one local sports headline yesterday. - Bud Norris' best start as an Oriole led the team to a 4-0 win to open a three-game set with Boston . But most of the focus was on Manny Machado, who was torched all day before he apologized in a MASN exclusive interview , which caused he and the team to be further skewered . Machado spoke to the full media after the game.
