"Lorna's Silence" speaks volumes. Its hero, played to ambivalent perfection by Albanian actress Arta Dobroshi, is an Albanian immigrant who's the borderline-unwilling centerpiece of a shady citizenship scam. She's married to a junkie named Claudy (Jeremie Renier), and the plan dreamed up by Lorna's pimp/accomplice, Fabio (Fabrizio Rongione), is for Claudy to die soon of an overdose - either forced or self-administered. Fabio doesn't care which. Then, he can marry Lorna off to a Russian who wants to stay in Belgium (since Lorna had been married to a Belgian, see, she's now a Belgian citizen, meaning her new husband would become one, too)

"My Sister from the Black Lagoon: A Novel of My Life," by Laurie Fox. Simon and Schuster. 336 pages. $23. Lorna lives in a nuthouse - and that's precisely the word she, too, would choose to describe her family home. Because Lorna, the narrator in Laurie Fox's autobiographical novel "My Sister from the Black Lagoon," is anything but PC. Call her AH and SF - achingly honest and surprisingly funny - in this heart-rending account of growing up with a sister who is mentally ill.In short chapters framing her life from age 6 to 20, Lorna Person teaches us what it is to be the "other child" in a household swamped by the needs of a near-feral youngster diagnosed, alternately, as schizophrenic and autistic.

In " 'J' Is for Judgment," last year's installment of Sue Grafton's alphabetical mystery series, private eye Kinsey Millhone got the surprise of her life when she discovered a whole slew of relatives she never knew existed. Readers expecting a family reunion in the new book may be disappointed -- orphaned loner Kinsey is still mulling her options regarding her newfound kinfolk. Aside from that loose end, though, there's hardly a dissatisfying moment to be found in " 'K' Is for Killer," Ms. Grafton's darkest and most haunting book yet."

Fuzzy magazine illustrations of nesting birds and Alaskan sled dogs might not seem like promising subjects for ambitious art, but Lorna Bieber's mural-scale black-and-white photographs at C. Grimaldis Gallery endow these banal images with a mysterious aura of arrested meaning. Bieber, who started her career as a painter, is interested in a classic minimalist strategy: How much can you take out of a picture and still have an image that signifies something? In a painting, the ultimate expression of minimalism is an all-white or all-black canvas (or any other monochrome hue, for that matter)

Early in her teaching career, Lorna Frendak took on a daunting task that was well beyond her scope of responsibility in the classroom: helping an 18-year-old girl who had become deaf and blind. The girl was a former student of Frendak's, and during her senior year in high school, she was diagnosed with neurofibromatosis, a genetic disorder of the nervous system that causes tumors to form on the nerves. A subsequent surgery left the girl deaf and blind, and unable to function on her own. The girl told Frendak she wanted to live like a normal teenager.

SOUTHERN DISCOMFORT.Margaret Maron.Mysterious Press.241 pages. $17.95. Agood politician never misses a chance to make a campaign promise. That's how Deborah Knott, North Carolina's newest district court judge, wound up spending a hot and sweaty Saturday helping an all-woman crew construct a house for an impoverished single mother and her two kids. "It's going to be such great publicity having a judge out there swinging a pick," gushes Lu Bingham, the director of the project.Unfortunately, one of WomanAid's hammers winds up being used in a far more sinister endeavor -- the murder of Colleton County's lecherous building inspector, Carver Bannerman.
