Editor's note: Over the next few days, the Today section will follow up on some of the people and issues that made news in the Baltimore area in 1998.These days, Loren Spice is a little thinner but a lot wiser -- if that's possible. It's been several months since 17-year-old Loren was perched on a kitchen stool, gobbling homemade gingersnaps in his parents' Madonna kitchen, trading funny jibes with his younger brothers and saying goodbye to neighbors, relatives and friends in the heat of summer.

Yes, our Parkville princesses drove a bus into a hotel. Gina is so distraught by her accident that she cannot perform the sobriety test properly: She literally cannot remember what the officer tells her to do. Gina is too busy hyperventilating and croaking, "I don't drink at all," to notice her daughter selflessly coming to her aid. The officer's advice to Gina: go relax and have some fun. "Grumpier Old Men" is pretty feeble, but the charisma and charm of its stars -- who deserve so much better -- manages to sustain it.Walter Matthau, Jack Lemmon, Ann-Margret and Sophia Loren! Between them they have several decades' worth of screen greatness behind them, and here they are, at the far end of illustrious careers, in a lame, motiveless sitcom that's not up to Paramount Network TV standards.A sequel to the surprisingly successful "Grumpy Old Men" of 1993, this one takes place the following summer and it mostly watches the same characters -- Matthau and Lemmon are surly neighbors who've fought mock war for years, Ann-Margret is the sculptress who's married Lemmon -- wander around in a fog looking for traces of plot.
