Romilda Villani, 81, mother of Oscar-winning movie star Sophia Loren, died Thursday in Rome after a long illness. Ms. Villani, considered a Greta Garbo look-alike, was said to have dreamed of a film career for herself. But she put her energy into Miss Loren's future.Jane Cooper Bland, 91, a teacher of art and art appreciation to young children, died Friday in a Philadelphia hospital. Her work with the Museum of Modern Art in New York included holding classes for children and providing instruction for other teachers.

Loren Generi, Navy Freshman, Bayport, N.Y., attacker Generi scored a career-high seven goals last Friday to help Navy clinch the Patriot League regular-season title with a 19-6 win over second-place American. The seven goals - which came on just nine shots - tied the school's single-game scoring record for freshmen and were one shy of Danielle Vivonetto's single-game school mark. Generi scored five straight goals during a 15-1 run and added eight draw controls and three ground balls.

Carlo Ponti, the Italian producer of films such as La Strada, Doctor Zhivago and Blowup and the longtime husband of actress Sophia Loren, whom he discovered as a teenager, has died. He was 94. Mr. Ponti, who had been hospitalized for about 10 days with pulmonary complications, died Tuesday at a hospital in Geneva, Switzerland, his family said in a statement yesterday. Mr. Ponti was a producer on more than 140 movies, including La Strada, Jean-Luc Godard's Contempt and Michelangelo Antonioni's Blowup, Zabriskie Point and The Passenger.

Forget swimming and gymnastics, tonight's Olympic-sized drama was in Vegas, not London. Gina made a grand entrance by ramming the mother/daughter party bus into the hotel. Yes, our Parkville princesses drove a bus into a hotel. Gina is so distraught by her accident that she cannot perform the sobriety test properly: She literally cannot remember what the officer tells her to do.
