The only one coming out of the 2008 Olympics with anything close to Michael Phelps' star power was his mother, Debbie Phelps. Caught repeatedly on camera at the sidelines rooting for her son -- and tearing up unselfconsciously as he inched closer to Olympics history, Debbie Phelps, a full-time middle school principal, became America's Everymom, and ended the event not only with a book deal, but an arrangement to promote her favorite clothing store,...

We know what Michael Phelps is going to do next. Golf anyone? Fresh off of winning six medals at the London Olympics, Phelps is going to tackle the world's best golf courses with help from the Golf Channel. The Baltimore swimmer, who says he has retired from competitive swimming after winning 22 career medals, including 18 golds, will learn the game from Tiger Woods' former coach, Hank Haney, as the next student on "The Haney Project," a Golf Channel show. Phelps and Golf Channel president Mike McCarley made the announcement Saturday . Past pupils on Haney's show have included former NBA star Charles Barkley, Maroon 5 singer Adam Levine and actor Ray Romano, according to the network.

U.S. sprinter Justin Gatlin clocked 10.17 seconds Sunday in Tallinn, Estonia, to win his second consecutive 100-meter final since coming back from a four-year doping ban. Gatlin, the 2004 Olympic champion, was running at the Ergo World challenge meet as he works toward the 2012 London Olympics. Before Tuesday, when he also ran in Estonia, he had not raced competitively since June 2006 after being banned because of a positive test for testosterone. Gatlin, 28, regained his eligibility in July but was expected to have difficulty finding races because of a Euro Meetings recommendation not to invite athletes who bring disrepute to the sport.

INDIANAPOLIS -- Michael Phelps powered back Friday morning after a rather desultory performance the night before, winning his heat in the 400-meter individual medley preliminaries at the Indianapolis Grand Prix. His time of 4:2131, second-best in the field, had his coach Bob Bowman in better spirits. Bowman was steamed Wednesday night after Phelps glided to his finish in the 100-meter butterfly, winning the race but at a slower time than he would have had he put in one more stroke.

Photo credit: Reuters With a year to go until the London Olympics, organizers are promising to take another look at whether a solitary terrorist could cause tragedy. From the AP : At least 93 people were killed when a Norwegian with right-wing views set off a bomb in Oslo and went on a gun-rampage at a youth camp. Olympics Minister Hugh Robertson says "we need to see what the direct cause of that is, but that will always cause anybody to look and to re-examine their own security plans.

Under Armour solidified its push to market to women and change the company's often masculine image Thursday by announcing a deal to become the official gear provider for USA Gymnastics for the next eight years. The partnership marks the first time Under Armour has sponsored an entire national team for the Summer Olympic Games, meaning the sports apparel company's logo will appear during televised events and could be seen on the medal stand in 2016 and 2020. Other athletes sponsored by the Baltimore-based company, such as Michael Phelps, were forced to wear competitors' gear, like Nike's, because of strict rules governing branding during the Olympics.

In Michael Phelps ' telling, one of the greatest Olympic careers almost began with a skinny dip. It was the first trip out of the country for the kid from Rodgers Forge, and he gawked like a tourist - not at monuments or museums - but at the famous swimmers competing in Sydney. "I was kind of just like, 'Wow, that's this person, that's that person, there he is, there she is. This is really cool,' " he said in a recent interview, channeling his wide-eyed 15-year-old self at the 2000 Games.
