Bicyclists have been riding at Loch Raven Reservoir for more than 20 years while the water quality at the reservoir has consistently improved. Although the existing trails used by hikers, fishermen, cyclists and equestrians do not conform to the outdated "approved" trail system, they have evolved without detriment to the water quality. The cycling community is asking for a comprehensive review of the trail system in order produce a state-of-the art, sustainable trail system that can accommodate all. Ruppel, the defending Class 1A state champion, established a fast pace and was able to fend off Dulaney sophomore Isabel Griffith (18:59.2) to come away with the win. In doing so, she took off more than one minute from her time in last year's county championship race, in which she finished second. This year, Ruppel also won the small schools race at the Bull Run Invitational at Hereford and the Barnhart Invitational at Dulaney.

Guns were firing rapidly this past weekend at the Loch Raven Skeet and Trap Center. Shooters took aim at a small flying disc of clay known as skeet, but the real target was breast cancer. For some, it might seem unusual that a group of largely male riflemen were raising funds for the Maryland affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure by pursuing their interest in target shooting. It's also a bit uncommon for a nonprofit organization to raise funds for another nonprofit. But the Shoot for the Cure event, held Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 1-2, made perfect sense to both the men and women who participated in an event at the start ofBreast Cancer Awareness Month.

The recent letter by Anne Roberts ("Loch Raven needs rules, but not deer hunters" June 28) was mind boggling. Yes, of course, we need to abide by the rules in order to preserve our drinking water and for safety reasons. Regarding the survey of residential properties adjacent to Loch Raven that found half of the respondents had negative experiences with hunters and hunting, I have not had one negative experience with hunters through decades of hiking in numerous states. I am a hike leader for the Community College of Baltimore County and have had negative experiences with mountain bikers each time I have led a group of hikers as well as when I hike alone.
