The Web site for My Sexy Lips lip balm features a sultry female model with soft, full lips and cascading curls wearing an expression that somehow says three things: beauty, intelligence, confidence. My Sexy Lips owner and Ellicott City resident Shelissa Kearney sits at her kitchen table for an interview about her new product for children, Little Lips for Kids. Even with her hair in a ponytail and no discernible makeup, her resemblance to the woman on the Web site is uncanny. Sure enough, it is Kearney, 31, who has been modeling since she was in middle school.

Today, I came across a box we hadn't unpacked when we moved. I tore off the packing tape and cautiously looked inside. I say cautiously because, knowing me, there could have been a three-year-old bag of Peanut M&Ms in there. Not that their age would have deterred me from eating them. Once, I found a yellow Peanut M&M at the bottom of a messenger bag I'd lugged to and from work for three years - at a previous job. I just wiped it on my shirt and ate it. Sadly, there were no M&Ms lurking in the box, I had come across.

Being a model can be awfully tough on the lips, what with the bright lights and constant smiles. So when Shelissa Kemplin Kearney, 28, who has spent the past 10 years posing for mobile phone companies and world-class designers, couldn't find a balm to keep dried skin from peeling on her lips, she made her own. Her all-natural vegan formula, found in My Sexy Lips lip balm, is selling by the thousands, enough to keep Kearney smiling. Kearney, who operates mybeautyfarm.com, which sells spa goods, loungewear and gifts, said sales of her lip balm accounted for up to 20 percent of last year's revenue from her Web site.

A colleague, Jerry Bayne , asks a question I hear a lot: My Asolo boot laces keep coming untied no matter how tightly I knot them. Would you know of a trick to make the laces less slippery to each other? I'm thinking maybe I should rub them with a rosin bag. Outdoors Girl , who has cursed many an untied lace in her time, responds: I feel your pain. Ever since shoemakers switched from flat laces to rounded ones, laces have been at loose ends. You'd think that boots costing more than $150 would tie themselves.

Ask self-professed lip balm addicts about their habit, and they tend to answer sheepishly. "I noticed I had a little problem," says John Eichel, an 18-year-old employee of Princeton Sports in Columbia. Eichel claims not to panic if he can't find his ChapStick, but it really stinks, the Highland resident says, "if your lips are all chapped and it feels like razor blades are cutting into them." And then there's Jacqueline Bethea, the 25-year-old Chicago entrepreneur who started a Web site for buying lip balm: Lipmedic.

He thought about it all the time. He had to have it. If he went too long without it, his need for a fix consumed him. This wasn't about drugs or alcohol or cigarettes. Not even checking his e-mail. Kevin C. was a lip balm addict. A sweaty, obsessed, quivering addict. So much so that he founded Lip Balm Anonymous. He's clean now. "It's been about 13 years, six months and two days," says Kevin Crossman, who will share his full name now that he's gotten past the shame. "I went cold turkey."

Is there any help for dry, chapped and peeling lips? I use lip balm constantly, but it only helps for a little while. I think I am addicted to this stuff. I've got tubes in the car, in my coat pockets, in my desk and all over the house. I just can't go very long without applying it. This drives me nuts. A controversy has been raging for years about whether lip moisturizers such as ChapStick, Blistex or Carmex are addictive. There is even a Web site called Lip Balm Anonymous that warns people about this issue.

Pucker up, because Old Man Winter is coming in for a kiss. And it isn't pretty. If your lips are getting flaky, showing the painful ravages of the dry, cold weather, they're not alone. "Lips are a target for dryness," said Dr. Joseph Bark, a Lexington, Ky., dermatologist and author of "Your Skin: An Owner's Guide." "It's hard to keep them oiled, and they dry out and crack." Summer's humidity, for all its discomfort, is the best balm for our lips while also keeping our skin and hair moist and glowing.

After a gastric bypass, I started craving mint in everything: mint coffee, ice cream, cake, cookies, even mint lip balm. I am worried, because all I want to do is sit down with a tube of mint ChapStick and eat. I told a doctor, but he laughed it off and said mint would not hurt me. Why am I craving mint? I just found out I do have a very low iron level. Could this be the problem? Your very low iron level could indeed be contributing to your craving. Iron or zinc deficiency is sometimes associated with a condition called pica.

Don't let the similar sounding names fool you: Pikmin has nothing to do with Pokemon. They're completely different, most notably in that adults can find enjoyment in Pikmin 2, while the appeal of Pokemon has remained a mystery to anyone older than 12. Pikmin also has nothing to do with Pac-Man, although, come to think of it, one wonders about the originality of these names. Trademark tip of the day: Grab Pekmen and Pukmun, quick! Pikmin 2, the sequel to 2001's Pikmin, improves on its predecessor in almost every way while keeping to Nintendo's maxim of delivering an intelligent game disguised in a cute package.

Q.I am worried about my mother. We visited over the holidays, and she just isn't her old self. I'm convinced the problem is her medicine. She has been on so many antidepressants that I have lost count. They have included Prozac, Paxil, Effexor, Zoloft and Celexa. She has suffered from anxiety and restlessness, insomnia, dry mouth and nausea. Her doctor is ready to give up. She now takes Remeron, but she is tired and dizzy all the time. She is still complaining of dry mouth and constipation.

One cosmetics maker is betting teen-age girls want to lick their lips. They're betting those same girls want to make their lips kissably sweet. Lotta Luv, a New York-based cosmetics and beauty company, introduced the Bake Shoppe and Candy Corner, two collections of lip glosses based on favorite brands of sweets, last year. The Bake Shoppe includes Hostess Ding Dongs, Ho Hos and Twinkies. Candy Corner markets Sugar Daddy, Cracker Jacks, Junior Mints, Dots and Hershey's glosses, among others.
