Lila Boyce Emory, a community volunteer who was a former board president of Union Memorial Hospital, died Tuesday of Alzheimer's disease at the Blakehurst Retirement Community. The former North Baltimore resident was 81. Born Lila Halliday Jones in St. Louis, she studied English and history at Vassar College, where a friend from Baltimore introduced her to her future husband, Charles Meredith Boyce, whom she married in 1942. Mr. Boyce, an investment banker, served on Baltimore's City Council and as city treasurer, and was president of Robert Garrett and Sons at his death in 1969.

There will a bit of a Hollywood presence today at Old Hilltop.Sam Shepard, a Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright and actor who has had roles in such movies as "Crimes of the Heart," "The Right Stuff," "Steel Magnolias" and "Country" is making his debut as a Maryland racehorse owner.Shepard's 3-year-old filly, Lila Wanblee, makes her first start in the third race, an event for maiden fillies and mares that carries a $15,500 purse.Charlie Hadry, Shepard's trainer, said he has had the daughter of Capote in his barn for about two months and expects the filly to run well.

Frozen River takes place during hard times in upstate New York, but there's no economic problem to the storytelling. Writer-director Courtney Hunt swiftly establishes a two-pronged narrative formula that keeps an audience on tenterhooks. Within minutes, a hard-bitten wife and mother named Ray Eddy (Melissa Leo), living in a small town outside the Mohawk Reservation on the border with Quebec, discovers her gambling-addicted husband has skipped town with the money she promised her two children would go to a double-wide trailer.
