SARASOTA, Fla. - One day after an ugly game against Team Spain in which they dominated, the Orioles took on an American League East rival in another sloppy game. They nearly gave it away, but in the ninth inning Ryan Flaherty hit a three-run, two-out, walk-off homer to give the Orioles an 11-10 victory against the Toronto Blue Jays. It was the first spring homer for Flaherty, who is fighting for a reserve infield role. The Blue Jays took the lead in the ninth by scoring two runs on a Luis Exposito error and an Adam Russell walk. Jason Hammel, who likely will be the club's Opening Day starter, allowed one run in 2 1/3 innings in his second Grapefruit League performance.

The welcome lifting of the federal consent decree on Baltimore City Public Schools does not mean all is well for students with disabilities in Baltimore and Maryland - far from it. Yet, the General Assembly rarely pays any attention to the fact that special education isn't nearly special enough. Hopefully that will change. Pending legislation gives lawmakers a chance to at least take a small step to improve the education of students with disabilities. As things now stand, students across the range of disabilities - from intellectual limitations to language impairments to dyslexia - are denied the opportunity to meet academic standards because they are not provided services to which they are entitled under federal and state laws.

Mark Pannenton hasn't wasted any time making an impression with the Stevenson men's lacrosse team. The sophomore attackman, who transferred from SUNY-Cortland, scored three goals - including the game-winner with 1:49 left in overtime - to propel the No. 2 Mustangs to a 12-11 decision over No. 8 Rochester Institute of Technology before an announced 418 at Mustang Stadium in Owings Mills on Wednesday night. Pannenton recorded five goals and one assist in the team's season-opening 17-11 victory over Nazareth on Feb. 16. In Wednesday night's extra session, he collected a pass from junior long-stick midfielder Warren Pumphrey, settled his feet and bounced a low shot from the left wing inside the right side of the net. "Warren obviously had a great ground ball up the midfield, and he just brought the ball up, drew one slide and put it right in my stick," Pannenton said.
