Rep. Ron Paul gave his farewell address on the House floor on Nov. 14 after serving 23 years in office over a 36-year span. During that time, he fought tirelessly and courageously for us, the people. He couldn't be bought by special interests, and his political pursuits weren't for self-promotion and didn't come from ego. He was the leading promoter of liberty, peace and prosperity on Capitol Hill. His search for the plain truth of things motivated him to bravely stand in opposition to several of the traditional policies and practices that undermine our full potential as a nation.

Dear Editor: As we approach the November elections, it is very clear that there is a stark contrast in the vision, principles, and philosophy of the two major parties. Both clearly have major differences in the direction they wish to take our country and they are seeking to persuade voters that their way is the best way for our future. The party that has the best way is the party under which our liberties will remain secure and not diminish or be totally lost. Our nation was birthed as a result of King George's violating Great Britain's constitution in reference to the American colonies.

Marylanders have an important decision to make this Election Day: whether or not to affirm their belief in the traditional American principle of equal rights for all, or instead to continue a system of special rights for some. A "yes" vote on Question 6 would sustain the Maryland legislature's recent historic vote that gave gay and lesbian couples to same right to marry as heterosexuals. A "no" vote would repeal marriage equality, perpetuating the unequal system of granting all the legal privileges and perks of marriage to heterosexual couples only.

No. 3 Marriotts Ridge wasn't perfect Saturday night, but the Mustangs proved they're still pretty good. Brad Martinelli scored two goals and added an assist, leading Marriotts Ridge (8-0) to a 3-1 victory over No. 8 Liberty (8-1) in a battle of unbeaten teams. Until the Lions scored Saturday, an opponent had not put the ball in the net against Marriotts Ridge this season. "We knew we wouldn't go through the season without giving up a goal," Marriotts Ridge coach Kevin Flynn said.

We like tribalism for the same reason we like to eat fatty foods: We evolved that way. Homo sapiens didn't survive long on the African savannas as rugged individualists. Alone, they couldn't scare away the scarier animals and, for the most part, they couldn't catch or kill the tastier ones. But in groups, humans rose to the top of the food chain thousands of years ago and have been passing down their tribe-loving genes ever since. Customs and practices that ensured the survival of the species were worked out through trial and error and passed from one generation to another.

In the packed house at the South Carroll Senior and Community Center in Eldersburg this past Wednesday, Sept. 27, there was only one question on the minds of those in the crowd: "Is Liberty High School closing?" Currently, Carroll County Public Schools is undergoing a review of school facilities and operations in the light of figures that show declining enrollments.
