New census data reveal major changes in the demographics of the Woodlawn-Liberty Road area. Population in those convenient beltway area neighborhoods decreased by 8 percent between 1970 and 1990, even though Baltimore County's overall population increased by 12 percent. Meanwhile, the area's racial make-up kept changing. While neighborhoods are still integrated, 66 percent of the population now is black. With spanking new housing sprouting up in nearby Owings Mills, where quality shopping is plentiful, county officials are becoming concerned that the Liberty Road communities might lose their attractiveness.

The ball hit the floor and, moments later, so did Katie Kelbaugh.Kelbaugh, a starting forward for Liberty, dove to the ground, threw her arms around the Thomas Johnson player and tied her up. Jump ball. Possession to Liberty."She does that a lot," said Amy Wolff, Liberty's top scorer. "She's probably one of the most aggressive players we have."Kelbaugh, a 5-foot-7 senior, does a lot of the so-called dirty work for Liberty. She dives for the loose balls, sets picks, boxes out and plays tough defense -- all vital to the Lions' success.

When the Liberty Lions and Westminster Owls get together to play soccer, you can almost always throw away the records and expect a good show.Last night in Eldersburg was no different. The two teams battled through 80 minutes of regulation and a little overtime before No. 15 Westminster escaped with a 2-1 win.Senior Jason Safely scored three minutes into overtime to give the Owls the win.The Owls (8-2-1) were just pleased to get back on the winning track after a loss and a tie last week.On Liberty's side, the loss in some ways typifies the struggles of a young team that played on even terms with the talented Owls throughout only to come up dry.The defending county champs fell to 3-8 on the year.

Vincent P. Buscemi led a 6-foot, inflated whale in a comic waltz, played a rapid-fire talk show host with biting satire, and charmed judges with stories of helping handicapped students. The performance earned the 17-year-old senior high marks in the swimsuit and talent categories and the title in the second annual Mr. Liberty Pageant on Saturday. In the good-natured spirit of the competition, the two "tearful" finalists broke from their consolation hug, hoisted Vincent on their shoulders and carried him offstage.

MIDDLETOWN -- It will go in the books as a 2-1 overtime win and a third straight trip to the state playoffs, but Liberty's narrow victory over Catoctin in the Class 1A-2A West region finals yesterday was so much more.Liberty coach Chuck Martin was expecting to use a lot of his players against a Catoctin team that was clearly overmatched.Instead, the No. 9 Lions ran into a Cougar squad that came in with a very good game plan and an even better goalie, Dana Bollinger. It wasn't until Shanna Ziegenfuss knocked in a rebound three minutes into overtime that the Lions could breathe a major sigh of relief.

When the North Carroll Panthers decided to pack it in with a tight zone against the Liberty Lions a couple of weeks back, they learned something really fast -- look out below. That's when guard Brian Trone went bombs away with six three-pointers -- including five in the pivotal first half -- to help lead the Lions to a 72-36 win.Trone is doing a little bit of everything for the Lions, but it's his fine outside shooting that gets most of the attention. The 6-foot-3 senior is averaging just over 11 points a game, with a team-high 36 makes from beyond the three-point line.
